Slow opening files (Office 2000, Windows XP)

    Environment: Office 2000, Windows XP sp2, Novell 4.90.0.1 sp1a, HP dc5000 MT
Problem: Some Excel and Word files stored on our network are very slow to open on some computers. They open just fine on others.

Do they all have the same settings on the virus protection?

Are are all the computers situated near to each other, you could be having network problems in some locations...

The computers have the same settings for our anti-virus. (McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0)

The computers are located in two different buildings and are on two different switches. Other people with the same set ups are also on those swtiches and are not experiencing problems such as these.

If there are really hardware differences (even with the same settings), it sounds like a hardware problem to me (but then I am a chemist and not a network/computer analyst, so what do I know... <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>)

Same hardware. Only differences are in the application software on each PC and the printers each user accesses.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

If they put a copy of that file on their harddrive, does it still load slow?

If it does not, it would point to a connection issue or virus scan issue. You might need your IT people to look at the connection...
