Distributing A Custom Label Format

I have created a custom label format in Word 2000 for a new user who has now decided that this would be great if this could be shared with another 100+ people. Is there a way to distribute this to the other users without slowly losing the will to live ?

Hi Michael,

Custom label formats are stored in the Registry. To distribute a label format, you need to copy the Registry key and give the file to others. All they need to do on their end is double-click the resulting file and merge the Registry key.

On your end, in the Registry, drill down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0WordCus tom Labels

and go to Registry/Export Registry File. Create a file name, specify a location, and verify that the option "Selected branch" is selected.

Then distribute the resulting file. As I previously mentioned, all they need to do is double-click the file to merge the selected branch to their Registry.

You are a real sanity saver BAM many thanks. Your suggestion is working fine. Perhaps one day I will have the nerve to look in the registry myself !

Re: Distributing A Custom Label Format

I saw this post when I did a search for custom labels. This is exactly what I would like to do, but would also like to dictate that when this label is used, that it default to row 1, column 2 for the label. Is this also possible?
Many Thanks!

Hi Girl Friday,

If you are referring to setting the starting point for the cursor, or in the dialog box setting the Row and Column for a single label, unfortunately this type of information is not stored in the label definition.

Although this can be done using a blank label sheet template and a macro

I followed your directions for distributing a custom label format. When the end user double-clicked the file in Explorer they received the following error message: Cannot import PATH+NAME.REG. The specified file is not a registry script. You can import only registry files.
