    Machine failure (Win XP Home)

I am not sue whether this problem should be here or under hardware.

I have a problem with my home machine whereby it reboots quite frequently and then seems to get stuck on checking the NIC. The notification I get is the machine has a DOS screen with the following message:

"Novell Netware Ready Firmware v3.15 (00112a)
Copyright 1998-2000 Novell, Inc. All Rights Reserved
    Realtek RTL8139 (A/B/C)/RTL 8130 Fast Ethernet MLID v3.11 (980812)
Copyright 1998, by Realtek Semiconductor Corp All Rights REserved
    Halfduplex Environment.

    RPL-ROM-ADR: 005 1C0B E2AA
    RPL-ROM-IRQ: 11
    RPL-ROM-PIO: E000

RPL-ROM-FFC: 50 BOOT DISK FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER."

When I get this message I just power off and reboot normally.

My system is a 1.6mHz P4 with 768 mB RAM with a Nokia 1122 DSL modem connected 24/7 through a Realatek NIC.

Can anyone advise on how I can overcome this annoying problem?
    cheers

Why do you think the failure occurs when it is "checking the NIC"? This looks to me like an error reading the disk drive, I would suspect the disk or disk controller. Make sure you have a good backup ASAP.

    Stuart

    Thanks for that.

Don't thnk it is a disk problem as it is a new 80Gb 7200 rpm Seagate.

I have replaced the Realtek NIC with an AMD one and am going to run it for while to see if the problem reocurs
    cheers
