    Copying Rules (MSO 2003)

Is it my imagination, or are the rules now *not* "backup-able"? I mean, I export them, and then later, if I'm setting up anew, and import them, most of the "To's" in the "Move to Folder" have to be re-set.

I also noticed that the "Only on this machine" is a default that applies again if you alter anything. Is this what the problem is?

    Regards,

    Re: Copying Rules (MSO 2003)

It's been my experience since Outlook 2000 that Rules with Folder targets are pretty sensitive to folder dislocation, and have to be reset if you mess with the folder structure. Anytime the internal Folder ID number changes, the Rule can't find the Folder. If you migrated your PST and made any changes to it, including moving to UniCode, the internal Folder ID may have changed. This may be compounded when you import Rules from a prior version because 2003 has technical differences in its Rules, but now I've told you more than I know. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

The "only on this machine" appears if you are not connected to Exchange Server or have a Rule that operates on a PST, because 2003 does a better job of determining which Rules can run on the Server side when a client user is not running Outlook. Now I've told you much more than I know.

    John:

I think you're right... In addition, if I, as I have done, copy my PST from C to D, and then back, the "brain" in Outlook sees this a s a change and nullifies many of the rule settings.

As just copying seems to disrupt the linkage, maybe I'll try ghosting it and see what occurs...

    Chuck
