Can't update NAV 2004

I'm using Norton SystemWorks 2004 (including Norton Anti-Virus ver. 10.0.1.13) and Norton Personal Firewall 2004 (ver. 7.0.6.17) with Windows 98 SE on a Dell Dimension XPS T-600 w/640 MB RAM.

I am unable to update any of my Norton (Symantec) software. I recently began getting an error message (LU1803) stating that the update files, including virus definitions, could not be installed. I've since begun using Symantec's Intelligent Updater as a work around until I get this figured out.

This has happened to me several before and each time, after asking Symantec about it, I wound up uninstalling the entire Norton Systemworks suite, then re-installing the whole bloody mess, after deleting the LiveUpdate files didn't do the trick. (I suspect my computer hiccoughed OR Symantec sent out a corrupt update file that threw my installation for a loop.) This time around I've deleted the LiveUpdate files and, when that did not work, attempted to re-install LiveUpdate from my installation CD and a previous downloaded file, all to no avail. I tried downloading the LiveUpdate file (both the full version and the light (lt) version but the download just seems to drift in cyber la-la land with nothing happening. My suspicion about a corrupt file from Symantec is even stronger now since a relative, some four hours drive from me, is experiencing the exact same problem with her Norton installation (same version, no less).

Symantec's automated support says that my Windows installation is running in "Audit Mode". I can only find ONE of the two registry values they suggest looking for. I'm very apprehensive about deleting the value from the Registry because (1) IT'S THE FREAKIN' REGISTRY!!!, and (2) I do not understand how, all of a sudden, this one value/entry came to be, or that it can be causing this problem. I do not even understand what this Audit Mode is and if I should really mess with it.

I'm hoping someone using this forum can save me a trip to Symantec's "support hell" (it takes God knows how many web page levels to get to the page where we can actually e-mail someone with a pulse. The research I've done so far has indicated that uninstalling this suite (NSW 2004) is not as easy (??) as past suites might have been (relatively speaking, of course) because all the suite's components are so enmeshed with each other. I'm also STRONGLY considering giving Eset's NOD32 a try so if anyone has any thoughts or suggestions about it, I'd appreciate hearing about that too.

With respect to uninstallation, should that be required, I believe Symantec has issued special "clean up" programs to assist in fully uninstalling its products. I can't find the link at the moment, but here are the manual instructions:

Re: Can't update NAV 2004

Steve,
I'm having similar troubles with NSW 2005. After using 2003 for two years, I decided to make the change to NSW 2005.
Following their suggestions to uninstall the old version first and also using Rnav2003 to change the reg, I went ahead and installed 2005. All went well EXCEPT for some of the liveupdates. Some were OK but it refused to update the AV program itself. The definitions updated OK but not the latest AV program itself.
After MANY uninstalls and reinstalls of the entire suite and going to their support site and downloading MANY "knowledge base articles" to completely remove the old programs first etc, I STILL have not been able to update the AV program and get their famous LUxxxx error messages.
I have called their support people ( In India ) at least six times and after having much trouble understanding what they were saying and not meeting with any success, they agreed to "escalate" the problem to one of the senior programmers after downloading my NSW log file to them. Promising a call back within 24 hours, they left it at that. That was 5 days ago, not hours, days. No response.

The program itself seems to work like it's supposed to do, but no update on the AV portion. I am just stubborn enough to see this thing through to the end. ( whatever that may be )
I'll keep everyone posted on this.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I had read that page prior to my posting to the forum and it made me shudder. If you do find the location of the Symantec removal tools I'd appreciate it so I can make use of them.

Thanks again,

-Steve-

Jefferson,
Norton does have these removal tools available for each version and also for the suite itself and for NAV, for the years 2001 through 2005. At least in my case they didn't work. They also give you step by step manual removal instructions for the files and reg. Same results for me. NADA.

Re: Can't update NAV 2004

Lyra,

In reading the software review in PC Magazine (2003) I was, both, apprehensive and impressed. I liked the parts about the product's speed, thoroughness, and efficiency. I am concerned about the reviewer's caution to novice users (that would be me!!), that they would likely find the product overwhelming. I do have some computer experience but am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination. Not knowing your level of expertise, how would characterize the software as regards the level of expertise needed?

Thanks again for your reply,

-Steve-

Re: Can't update NAV 2004

Hi Steve. I'm afraid I can't give you any ideas over how to solve your "Audit" problem, but I can give you my opinion on NOD32. I used NAV 2004 up to the start of this year, but then decided to take the plunge and go with NOD32. It's been a revelation! First of all it detected 3 items on it's first scan that NAV had missed, and since then has worked perfectly. Updates are almost daily and extremely quick, scans take a fraction of the time that NAV did, it's been perfectly stable (XP Pro SP2, ZA Pro) and it uses a lot fewer system resources than Norton. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone.

As an aside, NOD32 is the only anti-virus solution that has managed a 100% detection record in EVERY Virus Bulletin.com test since they started. The latest results are here

Re: Can't update NAV 2004

Hi Steve. I too had heard that NOD32 was a little difficult to understand for novices, and while not a novice, would certainly not describe myself as an 'expert'! I found it easy actually. I think the main issue may be with some of the terms that NOD uses, because the program itself is very straighforward to install and use. When PC Magazine was referring to 'novice users' I think they probably mean total novices who have only just started to use a computer (you know the ones- the sort who get sold a

Bob,

Don't hold your breath. I've got a file on the desktop of a server promising a call back from Symantec support January 2002. That was after many phone calls, e-mails, and being passed around to various techs. I've not tried to hold my breath. As a result of that incident I will never have any Symantec software on any machine (work or home) if I have a choice in the matter.

Joe, That's amazing. How can they ignore a customer that way?
Well, we will see. They haven't run up against this stubborn squarehead yet. No giving up, not without a good fight that is !
