    WOPR's Beginning!

I've been around for a little more that a year now, and have really enjoyed the family type atmosphere that this web site provides. I believe that I've made friends with some really great people, and certainly hope that this relationship will continue for a long time.
Since I've been around, I have never seen posts, or asked about the beginnings of this site. I very rarely see posts made by "Da Boss", and I know that Leif, Charlotte, Claude and a couple of others that I rarely communicate with have been around from the beginning.
As a new-ish member on this site; could I ask some of the originators to give me and others a little more insite regarding the beginnings of WOPR. (How did the site come about; where is the WOPR server to be found; Have the administrators met each other over a cup of tea. (I know Charlotte sits in the States!!?); etc)
I hope you get the meaning of this post...I certainly do not mean to pry into anyones private life, but I would like to know some of the history of WOPR and who and what are the roles that the administrators play in this great place!

    Many thanx for any replies!
    Regards,
    Rudi

This is some great insite...thanx Hans.

I'd love to hear some more details from the "old hands", for the benifit of all loungers if you are willing! Any other details that Hans missed out on, to give us all more insite into this site would be great!

C'mon Claude, MWolfman, Leif and Charlotte, and other Admins that are out there somewhere! Share with us your inside knowledge of the ins and outs of the site!

    BIG <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16> to ya all!

If I may, I'd just like to add a word to what Hans said. You'll notice if you scan the Words From On High Forum, that the majority of the posts there came from Eileen until her health caused her to "retire" from the heavy work of The Lounge. Eileen is, and will always be, revered by all of us who "knew" her - she is The Grande Dame of this place. Not only did she work super hard writing and modifying the code that gives us these pages, but it was SHE who set the family-friendly tone of The Lounge and made sure it's a place that people love to visit. ALL of us continue to strive to maintain her vision of what this site should be. In her profile she called herself a Hollywood Wife, but to most of us, she'll always be our <big>Mum</big>...

    <img src=/S/eileen.gif border=0 alt=eileen width=17 height=15>

Edited later: No need for a new post for this. I found <!post=this old thread,250350>this old thread<!/post> which also has a little further reading and might help some.

    Re: WOPR's Beginning!

    Rudi,

Thank you for asking the question. I am a relativley new lounger and I have been wondering where the lounge originated and the particulars of where it is located, etc. I have used the lounge as a "lurker" since the old version and remember when I could not find it anymore, but I kept it in my favorites and checked the status occasionally and one day it returned. I finally decided if I liked the forum enough to make it the first thing I look at in the morning when I turn on my PC I could and should participate. I have learned a great deal from the lounge from just reading the posts from others and have substantially benefited from solutions other loungers have offered to my posts. The lounge has certainly been one of my favorite experiences in the PC world and I am pleased to learn some of the history.

    Re: WOPR's Beginning!

Edited by HansV to correct details.

I've only been active for less than three years myself, so the 'old hands' will have to fill in the details (if they want to, of course)

The present version of Woody's Lounge is at least the third incarnation. There was a Lounge in the late '90s in which several of the current Loungers were already active. Then, one day, the server vanished and was never heard from again (so all old posts were lost). There was a short-lived interim Lounge in 2000, and on December 22, 2000 the Lounge as we know it came into being. You can still find the welcome by <!profile=Lex>Lex<!/profile> in <post#=2>post 2</post#>. This version of the Lounge was mainly designed by the late <!profile=Eileen>Eileen<!/profile>, with contributions from <!profile=Kel>Kel<!/profile> (then known as DrkRealm) and later additions by <!profile=Claude>Claude<!/profile>.

The Lounge has been hosted in various places in the USA. At the end of 2003, we moved to a new server, lovingly taken care of by <!profile=MWolfman>MWolfman<!/profile>.

    If Lounge VIPs get together, it's probably not over a cup of tea <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Thanx for your input CSimms. I'm hoping that this post will trigger some great feedback that will be informative to lots of loungers that enjoy finding out about the history of a great and successful site as this!

Thanks for jumping in, John! I've been hoping that more of you who've been around here for some time would make some comments, such as those in the referenced thread. But evidently some of us are tongue-tied right now. I remember making a comment to Mum about the fact that I felt "safe" in coming to The Lounge and I'm hoping (still) that some will add their recollections of what they saw and what attracted them to this place. I happen to think that, in this day and age, The Lounge is an extraordinary place.

    Re: WOPR's Beginning!

Good thread BigAl. It also touches on the period of time when Search had to be disabled because it was hurting Lounge performance, and also on the contributions of Admin <!profile=Ian>Ian<!/profile> Leacy, especially to the Lounge HTML rendering, who fell out of touch abruptly and to my knowlegde hasn't been heard from.

It's also kind of embarrassing to read some of my old posts when I knew even less than I know now. I was a lurker on the original Lounge, was a lightly active on the middle version, and have become addicted to the current version.

I was introduced to the lounge by Jack Passarella. When his book was published ("Wither") I travelled down to NJ to meet with him and get my copy signed.

    Re: WOPR's Beginning!

I'm not sure how relevant it is to the lounge, but I learned about WOPR back in the days of Word 2.0!
I'm surprised I can still find a download for the original packages at http://www.umich.edu/~archive/msdos/windows/word/:
    wopr-20a.zip 21-Jul-1993 11:44 334k
    wopr-20b.zip 21-Jul-1993 11:44 323k

    Re: WOPR's Beginning!

I remember seeing an extract (somewhere???) from one of Woody's earlier books - Hacker's Guide to Word for Windows in which an amazing DDE conversation between Word and Excel (I think) was established using WordBasic. DDE was a new, cool thing back then, and that, together with hacking into Winhelp, sparked my interest in windows programming.

I tried to dig into my archives to find it but, alas, I too was unsuccessful.

    Re: WOPR's Beginning!

The copyright notice on Woody's WOPR page says "1992-2005" and that other guy looks very recent to me, based on reading his News items and the 0.x.x level of whatever his code is. I wonder if Woody's of a mind to ... oh, nevermind.

But, your post and Claude's do put an interesting spin on Rudi's original post (question). I think Rudi was searching for background about specifically The Lounge, but it does seem that the origin of THIS place must lie somewhere in Woody's "opening" of the WOPR site back in 1992 (or whenever it was). Maybe some time when things settle down for him, Woody might add a few words to these musings about how or why he came up with the idea for The Lounge.

PS No one's ever noticed or mentioned this to me but I try to remember to type The Lounge as a "proper noun" since it seems to be an alternative form of Woody's Lounge, Amdragon Inc. from the copyright notice. It's a matter of respect with me...

That would be great....I think it's a real treat to hear of the beginnings of a place that I spend quite a bit of time at....esp. considering it to have this family feel to it. To get to know the persons and things that started this site!!!!

    Another interesting question:
Looking at the main index, I see all these hardware and software related sites of great and valuable info, then a little bit of light relief dealing with sharing pics and a bit of family chatter.....and then out of the blue you get a cooking forum.................(so I must conceive...out of the original developers, who is the chef around here????; or is it simply the fact that the FAMILY must eat too - <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>)
    Regards,
    Rudi
