GhostPciScanner

I'm being troubled by error messages on startup saying that WinXP has found new hardware called GhostPciScanner. Driver installation fails, for I've not got any new hardware nor drivers to install.

This thing started after a failed attempt to uninstall/reinstall Norton and I first assumed that the Ghost bit of the name was to do with this, but now I wonder. The only info on the web seems to be HijackThis scripts so I'm none the wiser. MS AntiSpyware doesn't report anything.

Can anyone throw any light on this "hardware"?

A Google search turns up a number of posts that involve this critter and most of the sufferers are using HiJackThis to try and track it down. Have you run SpyBot Search & Destory? Have you tries one of the on-line scans? You can't usually rely on a single anti spyware application, no matter who it's from.

Take a look here to see if this addresses your problem. It explains about "ghost" hardware and how to remove it. HTH

    Doc Watson

Your response gave me the clue, although I can't figure out why I hadn't looked in system hardware. I didn't have to make anything visible, there were 3 bits of installed software plainly obvious with yellow ? marks.

I deleted them and cleaned out the registry, and things now seem OK. I suppose it will be one of life's many mysteries why my computer should start to treat software installs as hardware.

    David,

Glad I was able to help turn on that little light. Sometimes the most obvious solutions are the ones we think of last.
