A creeper plant is climbing up and around a cylindrical tree trunk in a helical manner. The tree trunk has a height of 420 inches and a circumference of 32 inches.

If the creeper covers a vertical distance of 60 inches in one complete twist around the tree trunk, what is the total length of the creeper?

My grandson is about as many days as my son is weeks, and my grandson is as many months as I am in years. My grandson, my son and I together are 120 years. Can you tell me my age in years?

    Hi Tony

<Thanks to Mr Pythagarus> Is he a personal friend or did he predate Pythagoras? Anyway, he is to be congratulated.

Mr Pythagarus was an opinionated builder who always thought he was right, his favourite tool was an angle grinder and he played the triangle in an unsuccessful band. Pythagoras was his brainy ancestor.

    Re: Jeepers!

I think rob is a bit younger
<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Rob is R years old, his son is S years old and grandson is G years old
"My grandson is about as many days as my son is weeks" 365.25G = (365.25/7)S or S = 7G
"My grandson is as many months as I am in years" 12G = R
    "My grandson, my son and I together are 120 years" G + S + R = 120, so substituting gives:
    R/12 + 7R/12 + R = 120
So Rob must be 72 years old.</span hide>

    Re: Jeepers!

    Yours makes more sense. I misread the question <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

    I calculated using:
"my son is as many months as I am in years" instead of grandson...

    Re: Jeepers!

    #3 - I admit it was driving me so <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23> I had to Google for the answer, and it only goes to prove that <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold"> behind every man with a good idea is a woman looking over his shoulder. </span hide> <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    OK, OK - <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">...they were all invented by women...</span hide>.

    Re: Jeepers!

You've brought this little set of puzzles to a satisfactory close, Leif. Learning of the gender identity of the inventor of the laser printer, I expected it to have blusher as well as toner. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
