Can't recv HTML via Exch Server

I've been going nuts over this for months. If you guys can solve THIS, you're heros, and I'll broadcast this everywhere I can.

I use Outlook 2000 to access several mail accounts. No problem. Except, when somebody sends me an HTML email via my company's Exchange Server, it arrives as plain text.

It doesn't matter whether the sender is inside my company. The only exception is that when I send myself an HTML mail, it comes through okay.

Our glorious support staff has no idea why this could be happening. They disavow any knowledge of any setting that could have this result.

I have no trouble receiving HTML mail on any other account.

    Help?

No addins (don't got none); the only rules have to do with moving things to folders.

    > when you send yourself a mesage, is it using the same acct?

I've tried it with all my accounts, just to be sure. --Rats, what the ((@*#$?? I just sent myself a mail at the office account from my CompuServe account, and it came through as HTML! Am I losing my mind??

    > can others on the network recieve html messages?

Yes, we do it all the time. For instance, our company email newsletter is HTML. If the editor mails me the prelims (for proofing) at my office account, it comes through as plain text; everyone else receives it as HTML. If she mails it to my CompuServe account, it comes through as HTML.

This stuff drives me nuts. ;-/

    Thanks, MaryJ -

so it's specifc to your machine - or your contact. Where did the address for the newsletter come from, the gal or contacts?

I'm thinking your address is set to use RTF - which might convert html to plain text. I've never tested it with contacts settings, but i have a utility that converts html messages to plain text for similar reasons - took me forever to figure out why i couldn't send html out.

And btw, the senders inside my company do not have me marked as "plain text only." (That was the first thing we checked, of course.)

you're using outlook in corp mode correct? (connecting to exchange server)
the contact option would be to always use RTF. IMO mode has the plain text check box.

I don't know of a setting at their end to use RTF, but since I'm not configured for Corp/WorkGroup, that may be something I'm just not aware of.

Is that how it shows up in their contacts list, same as the "plain text only" checkbox I'm familiar with?

on one of the machines that sends you plain text, delete the NICK file. open your contact, set it for always use plain text, close, open again and disable the setting.

now send yourself html from that account.

i've seen the nick file get corrupted. It handles the resolution of addresses and remembers the last ones used. if they ever sent to use with plain text only enabled it could be remembered in the nick file, even after they changed the contact.

Is there a reason you can't move to the Corp mode? You can still have Internet service installed. I suspect that would resolve the problem.

    > Is there a reason you can't move to the Corp mode?

We did that a couple of months ago and it did cause me to lose some significant function - I don't recall what. But after a week of grumbling, I switched back (no tiny chore, as I recall... I remember wondering why it was such a big danged deal.)

I know we really wanted it to work, too, so it's not that I gave up lightly. I wanted the Out of Office Auto-Reply, the ability to share the company address book, share calendars, etc etc.

    > You can still have Internet service installed.

What do you mean "installed" - just have those accounts active?

Well, *I'm* game, but I don't know how amenable the folks in the office would be... what does the NICK file do? (My FIND suggests that it's the settings file ... will they lose all their settings??)

The Outlook client works on the basis of installed services. Internet mail is an installed service. Exchange server is a separate installed service, as are Personal Folder, Outlook Address Book, etc. In Outlook, the Internet service and Exchange service can co-exist, allowing you access to either Internet based mail or Exchange based mail. If you do this, there will probably be some quirks to which you will have to become accustomed.

nicknames - it's used for resolving the names. no great loss and outlook will recreate it.

everyone but you is using corp mode?

if you use multiple accounts, using corp can be a PITA but you can easily check pop accounts with it - just add the internet accts in tools > services

Sure; everyone but me is in the office. I'm the only remote user, accessing via cable modem from home.

    > nicknames - it's used for resolving the names. no great loss and outlook will recreate it.

Huh - I wonder if I myself have a problem with that file, too. In recent months I've noticed that Outlook will sometimes pause for as long as 20 seconds (locking up the entire computer) while I'm addressing an email. (But that's a separate issue from what others send me.)

    > if you use multiple accounts, using corp can be a PITA

How so? (I don't mind adding the accounts manually; is there some other pain?)
