    USB sticks backward compatible?

I am contemplating buying a USB memory stick to back up the essential files on an older computer that has only USB 1.1.

Can I safely assume that sticks designed for USB 2.0 (such as the Kingston DataTraveler Elite or the Sweex Memory Pen) are compatible (although of course slower) with 1.1? Kingston's web site is not helpful on this matter.

    Re: USB sticks backward compatible?

You would need to check on the operating system of your older computer.

Windows 98 would need a driver supplied by the manufacturer of the memory drive. These can be slightly flaky, in my experience of PenDrives.
Windows NT 4 doesn't support USB devices of any version at all (except via third party "fixes" best avoided).
WIndows 2000 and XP should be OK.

There's always the possibility that the USB memory drive you choose might not work on the specific computer you want it to, but, hey, who said computers were straightforward? <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

John is totally correct in that Win 2000/XP will work 'straight out of the box' and that Win 98 will need drivers installing. If your question was about whether or not USB 2.0 devices will work with USB 1.1 ports or not, then the answer is yes, USB is backwardly compatible. The only difference is the slower data transfer as you correctly surmised.
