    new mail again (2003)

    Hi,
When I open Outlook 2003 new mail comes in. So far so good.
I close Outlook and open it again: the same mail comes in again, and again and again!
    What's up?

There seems to be some confusion between Outlook and your mail server about what mail is "new." It's hard to be sure what is causing it, but I do have some questions:

    (1) Are you retrieving mail from the same server from any other computer?

    (2) Are you running a mail proxy (such as a virus scanning or spam scanning program) that intercepts mail on its way into your mailbox?

    (3) When you shut down Outlook, could there be any other program keeping it open in the background? You can check the Task Manager's Processes tab for OUTLOOK.EXE after closing Outlook as one way to diagnose this. (May requires Windows XP or 2000.)

    Re: new mail again (2003)

    The answers:
    1. yes, but there's no problem there. Both PC's have Outlook 2003. They have several shared addresses but also unique addresses. The PC that's giving this trouble is collecting all addresses over and over again. The other PC is configured exactly the same (concerning e-mail).
2.Using AVG. On the other as well, there's no problem. This problem started when converting from 98 to 2003!
3.No Outlook.exe in the taskmanager after closing down. When opening again, as I just did, 47 (old) mails.
    Thnx for your concern.

Is it possible that the one PC is configured to "Leave a copy of messages on the server"? This article gives a detailed explanation of the different scenarios available.

    Re: new mail again (2003)

That's standard for this client. But even by unchecking this, deleting all mail on the mailserver, gives the same results!
There's no mail left at the mailserver but old mail keeps coming in!
    I'll examine the article though.
My guess is, it has something to do with AVG.
But then: why not on the other PC's?
    Thnx anyway

I think we've officially entered the twilight zone.

I wonder whether you have any add-ins in Outlook that could possibly be duplicating mail already in your Inbox. Doesn't make any sense, but neither does retrieving mail that doesn't exist. <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>

    Re: new mail again (2003)

Well, I've been there before :-(
Come to think of, I've installed Calendar4Outlook which synchronises 2 Oulooks on this network.
But then, the other Outlook, which is installed exactly the same doesn't have this weird problem.
    Reinstalling Outlook to begin with?

    Re: new mail again (2003)

    HI,
Did you leave the twilight zone yet. We didn't. Mail keeps pouring in every time we start up Outlook.
Is there anybody having any idea how to stop this? It's only when starting up, not when you click Send/Receive
or Send/Receive automatically, like every 10 minutes.
I tried to use /nopollmail when starting Outlook, but that doesn't help either.
Is there another way of stopping Outlook 2003 checking mail at startup?
This weird behavior is driving us nuts.
    Anybody? Please?

Might the "Hotfix" described in this article apply to your situation?

    Re: new mail again (2003)

Hi John, looks a lot like my problem, I agree.
But where can I download this hotfix.
It's an OEM-version and I can't contact Microsoft with this PID.
I want to try it and will let you know.
    TIA
    George

You could try the supplier of your OEM version, but it's not likely that they will be able to help. It's probably worth giving MS a try. Apart from that, I don't know what to suggest.

    Re: new mail again (2003)

Just did. E-mail wouldn't work but an oldfashioned telephone call did it.
    Got their link and password.
Since it's not a public hotfix (coldfix? <gr>) it's not published.
    MSTalk?
I'll post a message when it works.

    Re: new mail again (2003)

    I tried, but no luck.
Opened Outlook 5 times, every time the same trouble.
Customer has to leave his PC on and Outlook open and it works fine.
As soon as he has to restart his PC and Outlook: bang, got you.
    Any other ideas?

Other than a "paid" support call to MS, I don't have any other suggestions.

Could it be something to do with the order in which Calendar4Outlook was installed? Have you tried completely uninstalling the add-in from both machines - simply to elminate it from the possibilities? HTH
