OL Crashes Constantly (WXP Pro OL2003)

For some time now Outlook has been crashing regularly. I'm talking about a dozen times a day. I have reinstalled Office, run the repair, run scanspt, and just about everything else I can think of. For a while i stopped using Word as my email editor. Everything seems to help for a little while, then boom, right back to square one. The info I get is most often ntdll.dll, but lately gdi32.dll seems to be involved as well.

    Any ideas?

    TIA,
    Michael

Both the DLLs you mention are Windows Operating System DLLs. It's possible that your system has become infected with some kind of malware. Does "...and just about everything else I can think of..." include AdAware and SpyBot - as mentioned in <!post=this Star Post,296439>this Star Post<!/post>? HTH

Thanks for the idea, but I'm afraid I'm ahead of you. MS spyware detect is run every night, and both adware and spybot once a week. In addition, Norton runs a complete system virus check twice a week.
    Thanks,
    Michael

Can you associate the crashes with a particular activity, or a particular folder, or a type of message, or something?

Have you refreshed the DLL's in question, and also mshtml.dll, from your OS installation source?

Re: OL Crashes Constantly (WXP Pro OL2003)

I cannot associate the crashes with absolutely anything. One or two have even happened while I was not in the program.

As for refreshing, I've run Windows Repair. I've got WXP Pro and Office 2003, all with updated service packs, so I'm not even sure how I would refresh my dlls.

    Thanks,
    Michael

I assume you mean that the program crashed while it was open but you were not actively using it. No other programs have this behavior? What is your messaging service?

yes, that's what I meant. If I understand your question about the messaging service, then i use my university's POP3 server via a cable connection. I have no IM service.

    Thanks,
    Michael

PS: I have to leave at 5.30, so if you don't hear right away, that's why. M

Re: OL Crashes Constantly (WXP Pro OL2003)

Continuing on my saga, the following DLLs have been cited by Events Viewer as causes of crashes:

    oledb32.dll
    gdi32.dll
    ntdll.dll
    mso.dll
    msctf.dll
    msmapi32.dll

They all reoccur regularly. BTW, having saved an events log file, what does one open it with?

    Thanks,
    Michael

To reinstall dlls, copy them from

    C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033NT

    to

    C:WINDOWSSystem32

In your case I would start by reinstalling only msmapi32.dll. It may help to reregister them per <post#=369287>post 369287</post#>.

If you use Winfax Pro, you should also see <!mskb=823525>Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 823525<!/mskb>.

Re: OL Crashes Constantly (WXP Pro OL2003)

Done. I found msmapi32.dll in C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMSMAPI1033, as opposed to
    C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMapi1033NT
where you said. Does that mean anything? Also, it appeared as though there was no copy of msmapi32.dll in
C:WINDOWSSystem32. That is, I was not asked if I wanted to replace the file.

    Thanks,
    Michael

My mistake, MSMAPI32.DLL should be located in C:Program FilesCommon FilesSystemMSMAPI1033. What version is your MSMAPI32.DLL file? (You can restore MSMAPI32.DLL from your Office CD, but you don't want to overwrite your version with an older version.)

The verison I have is 11.0.6361.0. As I mentioned, it did not seem to overwrite anything when I copied it to windows/system,

Re: OL Crashes Constantly (WXP Pro OL2003)

A few things. My advice on refreshing DLLs was in error regarding MSMAPI32.DLL, the correct location for MSMAPI32.DLL is where you found it, it's not stored in the location I initially mentioned, and it's not kept in SYSTEM32.

Second, you don't want to overwrite that version of MSMAPI32.DLL with an older one, unless you want to restore it from your Office CD and then reapply all the OS and Office SPs, etc.

Third, I had forgottten a step for you to try. In your SYSTEM32 folder you should have a file called FIXMAPI.EXE; browse to it and run it, and see if Outlook stabilizes.

OK, I've done that, though nothing much happened when I ran FIXMAPI.EXE. Is that all right?

    Thanks,

Yes, FIXMAPI doesn't give you any feedback. See if Outlook is more stable ovver the next couple of days, post back if not. (Though I'm out of ideas that don't include reinstallation and other tedious procedures.)
