Ghost and MFT

When I run Ghost to make an image of my C-drive, it writes thousands and thousands of MFT entries to the DVD. One time when I checked, it was up to number 32,000. The hard drive is a 20 GB drive and with Ghost compression set on high, it takes four DVD's to make the backup. Our IT guy thinks the MFT entries are files that have been erased but Ghost is backing up anyway. He says my FAT needs to be cleaned out but he does not know how.

My home computer with Windows ME and the exact same software packages can be Ghosted to one DVD with compression on high so it does seem that Ghost is writing unneeded stuff to the DVD's. I've empted the trash with no effect. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your IT guy ought to know that the NTFS file system has a Master File Table (MFT) but no FAT whatsoever!

You haven't said how full your 20 GB drive is, so it's difficult to say if four DVDs is reasonable.

Have you tried defragmenting the hard disk (which would make the backup quicker)? The Report when it finishes defragmenting (scroll down to near the bottom) will tell you about the MFT. (That's assuming that it is similar to the Defragmenter available in XP -- I don't have a Windows 2000 box any more...)

PS Mine says
Volume ( C: )
Volume size = 111 GB
Cluster size = 4 KB
Used space = 16.55 GB
Free space = 94.22 GB
Percent free space = 85 %

Master File Table (MFT) fragmentation
Total MFT size = 112 MB
MFT record count = 112,999
Percent MFT in use = 98 %
Total MFT fragments = 3

Ita, esto, quidcumque...
