download animated images (windows xp sp2)

All of a sudden I unable to download animated images. They are all untitled in bmp form and I cannot change the file type to gif. They can be renamed and saved but then they are not animated.
The properties of each attempted downloaded image say http, file type not available, although the gif is actually named. Also, while the dimensions are noted, the created and modified are not available.
I dont' recall having done anything with my system so I'm at a loss.
I should add that MOST of the sites download this way, but there are a few that download normally. I haven't had this problem before.
Any ideas?? Thanks!

Have you tried putting the download target name in quotes - such as "download this.gif" when you are saving? HTH

Tried that....it saves and then asks what program I want to open it. I choose windows fax and picture viewer (as always) and it shows but it's not animated....because it's still bmp.

Try choosing Internet Explorer as the opening program instead. I'm not sure but I believe that the Fax & Picture Viewer (like Paint - its "predecessor") is not capable of handling GIFs.

The Windows XP Fax and Picture Viewer is able to display animated .gifs. (And it is not the successor to Paint - it's an entirely different kind of application)

It has been a while since we had a thread on this!

The earlier consensus was that the first thing to try when you right-click, Save Picture As on a GIF or JPG image and IE thinks BMP, is to empty the IE cache (Temporary Internet Files), per this Microsoft Knowledgebase article: Internet Explorer does not save graphics files in the proper format (MSKB 260650).

Other suggestions can be found in the thread save as picture will only save as btmp (xp pro).

Actually, it WAS necessary to empty my TIF files...this solved the problem! Thanks for the thread and help!
