I'd try reinstalling the drivers for the printer first (this time use the ones that came with the printer or download the latest from the vendors web site). I assume that it is a USB interface device. If not, a bit more info about your hardware would help.

Since you have a fairly ancient printer (which I played with at least five or eight years ago!), I would be tempted to suggest that it has insufficent memory. Can you reduce the printer resolution in any way, to see whether it allows the printing of the three PDF pages? That would give you a pointer.

It may be worth hunting through the driver settings, to see if the printer memory is specified anywhere...

PS I hope you really have a little more than 1000 Kb of memory on your PC!

Obviously not a USB printer, eh John !!! Good thing we have some of you older folks around the Lounge to catch these little nuances. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Re: Computer Freezes when Printing (Windows XP SP2

Thanks very much for the responses. I have attempted to take your collective suggestions.

    1. I tried to download new drivers from Lexmark but the only ones I have been able to find 4029 PS17 and and 4029 PS39 did not work when I installed them (test page did not print properly). I have sent a note to Lexmark asking for help on which is the proper driver for a 4029-010. And yes it is old. Had it since 1991 and has worked extremely well.

    2. You are also correct, not a USB installation but through the paralled port.

    3. I tried playing with some of the settings (lowered the DPI in Graphics to 150 x150 (was 300x300). It does allow you to specify memory but it is already set at 1 MB , which is what I have. Also tried changing the settings to go direct to printer rather than spooling. There has been some progress, at least now I can print 6 pages (but it freezes up on the 7th)

    4. Unless there are 3 separate problems (and there might be) adjusting the printer specifics would not affect the freezing up when I try to scan or to run Norton Virus Scan.

Any other suggestions and where I can look/make adjustments would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I'll bow out of this thread now. The printer is older than my experience and I have nothing else useful to add. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck.

A memory problem could manifest itself in some strange ways. You could look at Microsoft Online Crash Analysis - windiag for infomration on running the MS memory diagnostic test. It'll take some time but will thoroughly test the RAM on your system.

Check the BIOS settings for your parallel port? I recall that there are several "modes" of parallel port operation (ECP, EPP, standard, IIRC). Perhaps your settings got changed to something that's incompatible with the printer.

Kind of sounds like you might a faulty bit of hardware in the printer. Some chip that suffers a heat-related death when you push the printer hard. Windows XP seems to have a weak sport for this type of error which ends up crashing the GUI. I had a similar problem trying to read a CD with a scratch on it. Would completely crash Explorer every time.

I feel obliged to point out that one can buy a brand new inkjet for <$40 these days. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-104-252&depa=1.

True, Jim, but it's a laser printer!

Re: Computer Freezes when Printing (Windows XP SP2

Boy, my memory on this is a dim subject, for I've been away from the 4029 (etc.) printers for a long time. It seems to me that when I was working at the television network where the IBM (Lexmark) printers were used heavily for web pages full of graphics and other instructional material, we had to increase the memory in all ours. I just can't remember if we bumped 'em up to 4 or 5 meg, but it was the max or close to it. Is there still memory available at a reasonable cost - I didn't go looking? It might be less expensive to get a new laser printer rather than add memory to your ol' classic...

Well, my poin was that an "alternate printing solution" is often less expensive than the time spent dorking around with old gear. However, it's just a personal preference, I suppose.

You can replace a laser printer for $129 http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=...653&dcaid=17653

Have you checked http://laser-service.com. They sell replacement parts and kits for lots of printers. On the other hand, it's a good idea to check the Ram on your computer as well.

Re: Computer Freezes when Printing (Windows XP SP2

It has taken me a long time but I finally resolved the problem. As I originally suspected it was a bad memory chip. One of the two 512k RAM chips had a problem. The boot up sequence did not detect it but when I got into heavy memory usage, like printing large documents, scanning a picture at high resolution or doing a virus scan the machine just froze up.

Wanted to thank all the contributors for assisting. The issue turned out to be hardware but the advise was appreciated anyway.

    Thanks
