KB891711-Windows 98 Dead in the Water

I just updated two security patches from Windows automatic update, supposedly to patch a vulnerability in cursor and icon format handling that could allow remote code execution. All seemed fine until a program hung up. From then on, rebooting seemed to work fine, but no mouse or keyboard entry worked at all. Started in safe mode (me in panic mode!) and found a new entry in my startup for KB891711.exe. The directory by the same root name was just added today. Took it out of my startup and all was fine.

Clearly something is very, very wrong with this Windows patch!

It appears that you are correct. A Google for KB891711.exe took me here and here just to list a few.

I have seen several reports about this patch causing programs to stop working. Hopefully Microsoft are working on a fix as they have now admitted to flaw in this patch.
