Is imaging software best for notebook backup?

What's the best backup strategy for a notebook?

Would it be best to use a "drive/disk image" software instead of the traditional backup software such as Retrospect?
I would use an external USB drive as the backup drive.

If so, which is the best "image" backup software?

Desired features include the ability to do incremental backups, restore selected files and restore the drive using a disaster recovery CD, without having to first re-install the OS.

Does image backup software backup the hidden partitions used by some manufacturers?

I think there is no substitute for imaging software in this day and age. I also believe that Hard drive image backup software is the BEST of the choices available. It will do everything you asked about including individual file recovery and CD recovery.

I saw the blurbs and the user manual for True Image.

It is not clear what the software really does.

In a number of places they state that they, in effect, copy sectors.

But in other places, they mention that certain files are not included, so the backup is not a true.image.

In other places, they say that they do incremental backups, but how can they tell which sectors have changed?

I guess ya better write to them and ask 'cause I don't know the answers to your questions. I make full images and have restored both full images and selected individual files - successfully. But I didn't write the software so I can't answer you about "how" it works.

I am finding it interesting that True Image is not carried by many of the large online vendors.

In one post you said "many" and in this one you say "several." Would you please provide two or three names or links so I may do my volunteer good deed and try to contact someone as to why they're not carrying such an excellent software product? It IS possible that other Loungers could benefit from this little exchange of yours and mine.

I did not say TI was not available, only that is surprising that such widely known online vendors do not carry the product.
Last I checked, Newegg had the best price.

I raised some questions at the Acronis forum and am just starting to get some answers.
Indeed, TI does NOT record to DVD.
