    missing/cprrupt dll

Hello, when I boot on one of my machines, I get to the logon/password area and after I have entered and returned details I get a message telling me a DLL is no treadable. How can I get a copy of this file, install to the machine and getting it working again?

    Many thanks Darren.

The System File Checker might do what you want - see MSKB 185836 and this Symantec page for example.

Otherwise - what dll is causing the problem?

    Re: missing/cprrupt dll

Hi again, the error message doesn't allow me to even get to the start menu. I can't find my original windows disk, error is "runtime error 48= PSAPI.DLL". Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

Have you tried starting in safe mode?

If you no longer have your original installation disk(s), you are not going to be able to run SFC. You can get a copy of PSAPI.DLL here, but I have a feeling that may not be the end to your problems. Are you running any anti-virus software?

Strange - everything I can find about PSAPI.DLL says that is is a Windows NT/2000/XP file, not a Windows 98 file. If you search Google for download psapi.dll you'll easily find sites where you can get it, but I don't know if that will be useful.

    Re: missing/cprrupt dll

    I found the following here.....

Try a registry restore to a previously working state:

Tap F8 at startup and select command prompt.

    At the C: prompt type:

SCANREG /RESTORE (note space between G and /)

Select a date just BEFORE the problem started and reboot when finished.

    Re: missing/cprrupt dll

Thanks guys, I have found it's some kind of virus. Most directions say restore my sysytem prior to it by using some ultility from the start menu, trouble is I can't get tto start. Doc, I tried your approach but after selecting a date the system says it can't do a scan, the list of dates was rather restricted and I'm not sure the farthest one back was before the problem. Is there a way of typing my own date?

    Thanks.

Unfortunately, if you didn't set a date you can't go back to it. So, moving on... can you share with us what virus you believe it is and what leads you to this conclusion ??? The more details you provide, the easier it is for us to help you. What removal instructions have you received and what utility are you supposed to run from the start menu ??? Can you start in Safe Mode ???

If you still believe that the missing .dll file wil help you, you can get a copy of it here.

Further research leads me to believe that you are infected with the funner worm. You could try an online scan to detect and hopefully remove it but it can be difficult to get all of it. Check out the Symantec page on the bug and their removal instructions. HTH
