    Microsoft AntiSpyware

I installed MS Anti Spyware on this PC, and my laptop about a month ago and so far have been very pleased.
My stepdaughters computer was showing spyware. After using Adaware, and Spybot and a few others to no avail in removing it, I decided to install the MS Antispyware and see what happened. Well, it removed it successfully and the computer is back to itself again. Looks like MS has a winner.
    Thanks John

Me too - I really like MSAS and I have installed it on all systems - but note that every time I scan my systems (at least once a week) I still use AdAware, SpyBot, and then MSAS, noting that no single program gets them all. I have MSAS scheduled to scan every night too - right after my nightly AV scans.

    Bill,
Agree with all of above. However, there is a bug in MSAS's autoscan program that needs highlighting. If you've set it to autoscan daily, or you just do your scans manually, then you won't see the problem. But for those running it just, say, once a week (as per me!), it actually kicks in and runs two days ahead of when you set it for! (eg, you set it to run at 1900 weekly on a Friday, it actually kicks in and runs at 1900 on Wednesdays! - provided, of course, that you actually have your computer switched on at that time. If it isn't switched on, then you may not be immediately aware that your scans are not actually running!!
Believe MS are aware of the bug and, presumably, will fix it once the Beta has run its course.

I have it set to run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It also runs on Saturday, without being asked!

    Re: Microsoft AntiSpyware

Hey Keith - did not notice that - mine runs at 5 am - after my AV scans and have had no scheduling anomalies - BUT I have noticed that the auto-update did not always work correctly. That is, if I manually ran it and checked for updates, it may find one that it should have found automatically before.

It is a Beta - but not really. It was a full production release of Giant Anti-Spyware prior to MS buying it - all MS did is re-brand and redirect links - supposedly.

At any rate, I like it and I expect MS will keep it free in their effort to earn some respect back from the security conscious folks out here - and I applaud them for it.

CounterSpy from Sunbelt Software has now taken top honors from PC World and seems quite promising - but it is not free, requires a annual subscription, and only works on 98SE and newer.

Wasn't there also something about checking whether your copy of Windows is validly licensed? Not that it should affect the timing of updates.

MS strongly urges you to have your copy of Windows validated before it lets you download the application. There are no validity checks (AFAIK) when running the app, updating it etc.

I think Hans is right - for now - although there is a volunteer validation, it does not force you validate. Once out of beta, I don't know . I have also heard that future releases will be SP2 only and so it will check for that.

    John,
Maths was never my best subject (!) but, if you count back two days from Monday then that might account for the 'gratuitous' Saturday run? And, Wednesday's might then be Monday's and ............... Oh heck! At least it works!

Yes, your maths is fine! I will see what happens this morning, for it is Friday and it should run today, and furthermore I haven't set it to run on Sunday morning...
