windows licence (XP- home SP-2)
Computer is a Compaq Presario notebook computer with pre-installed XP home, upgraded to SP-2 immediately upon purchase. Had been working OK, and today, I checked my email successfully about noon. Shut down the computer. Early evening, powered-up the computer, only to get some really unexpected behaviour:
- a loud "bong" sound when the Windows "Welcome" screen appeared
- choose the only user account on the computer, and get an error message to the effect of "Windows has encountered a severe problem trying to validate the Windows licence, and cannot run..." There was an error code, but I did not write it down.
Went thru several iterations of power-off, all with the same results. I was able to log on via safe mode, and use the user account OR the administrator account. Created a new account successfully. But Normal Windows always issued the same "licence activation" error message.
Powered off the computer with no plan of how to proceed. Tried again about 1/2 hour later, and it worked properly. AFAIK, I did not do anything to cause the problem in the first place, or to fix it.
Any idea what caused this bizarre behaviour, how to prevent it in the future, or what to do if/when it happens again?--------------------------------------------------

I'm assuming that the computer is not new, as you had to install SP2 when you purchased it. That said, it's possible you have run afoul of this little MS counterfeit counter measure. Check with MS or the party you bought the laptop from. There may be a reason why it was not upgraded before you bought it.
