Windows Logon Password (XP Pro SP2)

Here's a question inspired by a post some time ago that I forgot to ask back then - now I can't find it. Just now, while doing my morning reboot, I typed my logon password incorrectly (fumble-fingers) but got it OK on the second try. Does Windows XP, or Win2K for that matter, have a limit to how many tries it will allow and, most importantly, will it lock the user out afterward? I've looked in Help and not been able to find it, and a Google brought up so many "incorrect password" hits that I need to find a better phrase to search for.

Re: Windows Logon Password (XP Pro SP2)

    Some info here at windowsnetworking.com.

My XP Pro machine here at work appears to have no default settings, but I'm certain my laptop at home, which has both XP Pro and Home on it, has some settings in the Home version. Having forgotten the logon password, the Home version now locks me out for something like 1 hour after 10 incorrect attempts. (The Home version was pre-installed by Sony, I left it there just in case it came in handy for something.)

(BTW, if anyone knows what my password is, I'd be grateful if they could remind me...)

Thanks for that, Leif, including the link. My settings are the same as your screenshot. I guess it's good to have this info here in case someone else does a search. Since I never set mine, I assume that these are the defaults and that's why no one (much) has asked the question before that one post I remembered.

    Yes Leif, your password is <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold"> ******** </span hide>

    Hope that helps.

According to Account Lockout Policy, those are the default settings.

Thanks Lyra - and I appreciate your thoughtfulness in hiding it from everyone else <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    No problem, glad I could help. Just don't ask how I managed to find it out! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Re: Windows Logon Password (XP Pro SP2)

Thanks Hans, that's a good link too. I guess I should THINK about changing those defaults, just in case. You see in addition to the built-in Administrator account, I have two other user accounts setup with admin privileges and one limited user profile. All the "admin" accounts have different passwords which I've recorded offline. (Careful Lyra, don't give mine away too!) One of the main reasons I setup more than one administrator user was on the advice of a longtime NT/2000 user at work who suggested it, not for password reasons, but in case a profile got badly corrupted. Prior to installing XP, I had "only" used the Windows OSs like 98 and 95 and ME, so I was quite green about security (maybe I still am!).
