Desktop Icon Rearrange (XP Pro SP1)

Dell laptop, user closes the lid and upon reopening the icons have rearranged. The desktop will behave if he suspends but he doesn't want to do that.
Resizing to 640 x 480 for an instant but then it immediately goes back to the proper res with icons moved. Is there anything here that rings a bell?

    I'll get more info tomorrow.

What Dell model is the laptop?

Does this happen when the laptop is docked? What applications are running? Have you checked the Dell support site for updated drivers and/or updated BIOS?

It's not a solution, but a bypass, but there are several bits of freeware that will save the icon positions on your desktop to a file, and restore them subsequently on command.

Unfortunately I didn't keep information about where I got SaveDesktop.exe and RestoreDesktop.exe, but there are versions for 9598ME and NT2KXP, and they are only around 50KB in size... Perhaps someone keeps better records than me?

Here is the latest from the client, who has a Dell D600 laptop:
"I am not powering off. Power management is set to "do nothing" if I shut the lid.
All I have to do is either shut the lid or just push the little pin (above the volume buttons) to cause the icons to move. Either way. 1) The screen goes black. 2) When it comes back I see a quick flash of the screen in a lower resolution. 3) The screen goes back to my normal resolution (1024X768) 4) The icons have moved.

Never had the issue when docked. But I always (and I do mean always) put the laptop into the dock with the lid closed and turned off. I also never open the lid while docked."

Previous tech shared that he updated BIOS from A12 to A15. Icons still moved. Changed setting so that unit would go into suspend mode when the lid was closed. The icons did not budge but client had to enter password to get unit to come up again. Client did not want to suspend and use the password."

I am plugging his service tag in now to find out what updates might be available for video, etc.

Is the screen resolution set to a different resolution when it is docked? If so, check out the save/restore desktop utility John Gray mentioned in <post#=467661>post 467661</post#>.

Re: Desktop Icon Rearrange (XP Pro SP1)

The fix to update the video driver from Dell for the ATI mobility radeon to the latest OR go back to an older one. I don't have the version that was installed but there was a thread in the Dell forums under "d600 close lid".

Some folks went into services control panel, changed the Ati Hotkey Poller service to manual startup, then rebooted, but that disabled hot keys.

Thanks, but that's not the exact one I have!
    In mine, desktoprestore.zip
has two directories 9598ME and NT2000XP,
each of which has savedesktop.exe and restoredesktop.exe
and there's no installer - you just run them from where you unzipped them.

It's not a problem not knowing where theyt came from, but I usually put a file somewhere to indicate the source...

    Thanks for the suggestion!

Re: Desktop Icon Rearrange (XP Pro SP1)

Saw somewhere in the Dell Forum that if you open up the top of your machine and close it again (incorrectly - I suppose), the system will think it is (was) in standby mode. The hinge covers can cause these type of problems

Re: Desktop Icon Rearrange (XP Pro SP1)

This client had set the advanced power save feature for "when I close the lid" to "do nothing" but that was not what was happening. Turned out as pointed out earlier, the video driver was the culprit. Upgrading to the newest driver rather than going back to an older one, as suggested at Dell forums, resolved the issue.
