Trouble booting to drive...

One of our work PC's is having trouble booting up. Apparently the user performed an auto-update and then now it's keeps cycling over and over in the boot process and never gets past that.
I put in a floppy to boot from and when I tried to get to c: it said invalid drive spec. I looked at the CMOS and it read that there are two drives. What's strange about that CMOS is that all of the options are blued out not allowing any changes to even the boot sequence.

They put in a third drive that they know does work and it did the same thing.

Would this mean that the MB is fried or something else?

I'm not sure which exact thread you were referring to, but those I looked at didn't really give any answers.

BTW, it won't even go into safe mode either.

Is it an MBR issue?

Boy, that does sound to me like you've got a motherboard problem, not at all related to the hard drive. Of course, I'm only speculating and it would be good to go to the web site of the MB manufacturer to see if you can find any help.

How far into the boot process does it get? What is your OS? Do you have an easy way to repair the MBR?

Re: Trouble booting to drive...

The OS is XP; it only gets through with the POST, then gives the option of what kind of login to choose (safe, normal, etc.). With safe mode, it does start going through 2 screens of loading drivers, then dumps out.

I have not tried repairing the MBR yet. I was just going to use a floppy that has fdisk on it. What is it: fdisk /mbr or something like that? It's strange that I can't get to a C: prompt though. Is that because the drive is most likely NTSF?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q69013 talks about Fdisk /mbr and yes, you have the right syntax. NTFS should not be your problem.

When in the BIOS, does it show the correct specs for your drives?

If some drivers are being loaded then the disk is accessible. Can you tell which is the last driver it is loading? Can you boot with an XP CD into the recovery console? It could also be a RAM problem. Can you swap out the memory temporarily? Or remove one stick if there is more than one? Also, try Microsoft Online Crash Analysis - windows memory diagnostic.

Re: Trouble booting to drive...

I ran fdisk /mbr and it seemed to run OK, but nothing changed.
I downloaded the memory check program, but it won't run in DOS mode.
I did pull both SIMMS and checked them each by themselves; no change.

In safe mode, it gets to the loading of mup.sys driver each time, then recycles. Always at the same spot.

When booting from a floppy, then going to C: it still says "invalid". But we pulled the drive out and was able to read it on another computer via slave mode and it works fine.

We cannot boot from the CD-ROM as we can't change the boot sequence.

The BIOS and the POST both show the correct drive installed.

What now? BIOS or MB?

Have a look at Google Search: mup.sys. There a several threads which seems similar. Maybe you can glean something from there.

Re: Trouble booting to drive...

Yes, I saw that did. There's a lot of text there to work through. I'll see if some of that works.

The problem is that since I can't boot to the CD it makes it hard to get to the repair mode of XP. The BIOS won't let me change the boot sequence.

Interesting that several of the people who had the same issue had just performed a SP2 upgrade.

Has the BIOS been locked down by your IT folks? Won't they change the boot sequence for you?

"I" am the IT department and this PC isn't even one of our networked units.

We can get into the BIOS with a password, but it doesn't allow us to change the boot sequence. Only view it.

Re: Trouble booting to drive...

If that hard drive works OK in another machine - it sure sounds like a bad or corrupt BIOS or a " dying " motherboard to me. But I'm purely guessing, of course...

Re: Trouble booting to drive...

I don't recall ever coming across a BIOS that wouldn't allow the boot sequence to be modified - however I'm sure there is that possibility. I wonder if the password you're using to view the BIOS is simply for read only access? A possible way around that read only password could be resetting the BIOS via a jumper setting change on the motherboard. I'd suggest checking the documentation for the motherboard (in print or online) to see if that's possible.
