AutoNumbering problem

A person in our company has a Word 7.0 document in which the template utilizes multi-level paragraph numbering. Around Step 1.4.2.4, they inserted a table. After the table, the step (promoted to third level) restarted numbering at 1.1.1. Not the desired behavior, naturally. They tried restarting the numbering for that paragraph at 1.4.3 (the desired number), but after doing so, it changed the numbering for the entire document, starting at 1.4.3. I haven't been able to remedy this so far. Any ideas?

Re: AutoNumbering problem

Hi Gary D.,

It's hard to troubleshoot these remotely, but it sounds like one or more levels got unlinked - to see if this is the case, place the selection in a paragraph that has the first numbering level style applied to it.
Then go to Format>Bullets and Numbering, and see if the third and fourth level styles are still showing as linked.

Styles at different levels sometimes get unlinked, in which case the fix is, starting from a Level 1 paragraph, to go into Format>Bullets and Numbering>Customize and re-link all the different levels of styles.

Another thing to look out for is if any of the text (for example in the inserted table) contains any odd characters such as the euro symbol or large bullets. Unicode characters are a known cause for outline numbering to go bad - in this case the problem manifests the next time the document is saved. This issue was fixed in Word 2000; with earlier versions of Word the only solution is to leave these characters out.

Hi Kent,

Word's automatic numbering is subject to problems that can be prevented much more easily than they can be fixed. See Word's Numbering Explained by John McGhie (mvps.org/word/FAQs/)

Hope it helps.

Hi Doug,

Sorry about the name. I should be doing something far more pleasant (sleeping?) at 3:55 a.m.

Here's another caveat to throw in: You can select and cut the table to the clipboard, in which case the paragraph numbering is correct (the next paragraph is 1.4.3). Once you paste the table back in, the next paragraph becomes 1.1.1.

BTW...who are Kent and/or Doug?
