TOC - Problem with Chap #s Included with Page #s

    Hi all!

In Word 97, I am trying to set the page number as 3A-1, 3A-2 without having to manually add the "3A-" before the page field code in the footer. Ultimately trying to make the TOC show/update the page numbers as 3A-1, 3A-2, etc. Heading 1 is set as "Chapter 3A", but have not found a way to make the "A" a code--it is manually typed. Is there another way?

    Any help would be most appreciated. <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15>

Are you going to have/need a Chapter 3B?

Actually will need a 3A through 3D, and all are separate documents, not master/sub.

    Hi UD,

There is a way to do this, but it's going to take some trickery :-)

First, ensure that the numbering for Heading 1 is being produced via outline numbering. The way I'd do this is:

With the cursor in a Heading 1 paragraph, go to Format>Bullets and Numbering, and click on the Outline Numbered Tab.
Find one of the gallery views that show Heading 1, 2 etc. styles linked, select that gallery view, and then click on Customize.
In the Customize dialog ensure that the numbering for Heading 1 style is set to produce "3".
Next step down to the next outline numbering level; Heading 2 style should be linked to this level.
Under Number Format you should see two gray fields. The first one will say "3" as it reflects what you've set Heading 1 to do. Select the second field, and then change "Number style" to the A, B, C etc. style.

You can then "OK" your way out of these dialogs.
Back in your heading paragraph, apply Heading 2 style to it - the numbering should now automatically come in as "3A". (for this method to work, you will need to use Heading 2 rather than Heading 1 for your chapter headings - if necessary you may need to change properties such as font in the style definition.)

Now go to the page number field in the footer, and click on the icon for Format Page Number.
In the Page Number Format dialog, click a checkmark next to "Include Chapter Number".
Next to "Chapter starts with style" select "Heading 2" from the list.
Next to "use separator" select hyphen.

Your page number should now be a field that reads "3A-1" etc.
When you generate the table of contents, the page numbers should display likewise. <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>
