Defrag Problem in win 2000 server

I have a severely fragmented hard drive on a windows 2000 server.
I have been running defrag several times over several days, when today I cleared out some temporary files/folders.

Now defrag refuses to run. I get the error message:

Temporary directory is not found or there is not enough disk space.

I know there is enough space just! (23%), I ran defrag a couple of hours before.

So what temporary folder is defrag looking for?
I don't want to have to stop the sever and restore my backup, just restore this one folder.

    Thanks in advance
    John

Problem solved after a forced reboot of the server!

    Cheers
