    .WAV to .MP3 converter

    Please could someone recommend a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> WAV to MP3 converter?

All the historical Lounge posts seem to have wanted to go the other way...

    Thanks!

    Re: .WAV to .MP3 converter

    Hi John

My understanding is that the MP3 codec is copyright protected and the copyright owners are very persistant in persuing anyone including it in their software without license. Therefore you will unlikely find free software allowing you to convert to MP3.
However, there are some such programs on the web for under $20 US. You could check out dbPowerAmp for one.

    Have a Great day!!!

I've used Quentissential CD (QCD) for quite many years. It's been recently updated to support a wide variety of media playing and conversion (including wav to mp3, although I think you may also have to download a free plugin to accomplish this). It also rips directly from CD to any desired format.

    Thanks, everyone!

I Googled for "WAV to MP3" (including the double quotes) and it came out with lots of MP3 to WAV converters!

    Re: .WAV to .MP3 converter

iTunes will convert .wav to .mp3.

Another good audio editing program (about the only thing it WON'T do is convert to MP3) is Audacity.

    Both are <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>.

    John,

When I click on the link I posted there were at least three wav-to-mp3 programs on the first two pages. You are correct most are mp3-to-wav. You should be able to get a few to check out.

    Joe

Thanks - I got one at least from your link, and have tried it, and it gives about 11:1 reduction from .WAV to 128 kbps .MP3. (And many happy minutes trying to find in which directory it had hidden the output file!)

I will be trying the other suggestions this weekend, but for what I want most of them seem to be way over the top. (Might get to playing Heart's "Bad Animals" on Granville's <!post=stereo equipment,468446>stereo equipment<!/post> at ear-shattering volume, before converting it to MP3...).

    John,

That equipment looks like it could shatter not only the ears but the walls!!

    Re: .WAV to .MP3 converter

    Hey John,

Another choice is MusicMatch. My version is 7.50, and I don't know if the current (10) still has this WAV2MP3 option. When you launch the player, go to File | Convert Files... Then select "WAV" from the "Source Data Type" dropdown list and "MP3", "MP3 VBR", "MP3 Pro", or "MP3 Pro VBR" from the "Destination Data Type" dropdown list. I don't know what the "Pro" thing is. Anything without "VBR" assumes a constant bit rate, and "VBR" means, well, variable bit rate. The only drawback I've found with VBR MP3s is that Winamp will hang up when trying to recognize some of them.

And, besides this file conversion option, I've found MusicMatch to be a great CD Ripper <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>

Not free, but you may have it without knowing.

I have an (oldish) version of Nero that came with a CD-RW that I bought years ago. It includes "Nero Wave Editor" that can do this job.

    Re: .WAV to .MP3 converter

Someone has already suggested iTunes as a free program that has conversion capability. As you probably already know, iTunes is an outstanding and complete audio program that has many features...

However, if you're still looking for a program that specializes in doing audio file conversions, you should give Ace High a try. It is free to try and will convert nearly any audio format to any other audio format. Conversions is it's primary function and it does it well. I've been using it for quite some time. It will let you do about ten conversions before you have to register ($20)

Way late in the day - as I haven't looked at this Board for some time, but...

Before I (more or less) gave up on MP3, it seemed that lame was by far the most sensible bet. I found it runs best from the command line - which shouldn't be too difficult for someone with your BATch files skills.
