    Unwanted System File on Startup

For some unknown to me reason I am now getting the C:WindowsSystem folder opens up on startup on top of the desktop. It lets me close it but how to stop this. I have run msconfig and checked the Startup Files and looked for anything that looks like it but I don't think I see anything. What should I look for or what else could be causing this?
    Thanks in advance

Re: Unwanted System File on Startup

This problem has come up before but I don't remember if it was ever in Win98. I know it was concerning WinXP, so I'm about to search both of those forums - I'm just not sure of a good search phrase, so perhaps one of today's readers will beat me to it. I do remember that there was a link to a MS KB article that talks about a "null" entry somewhere in the START key of the registry, but that wasn't the solution in my case. When it happened to me in XP it was not a System32 window but a McAfee software window. I stopped it by a process of elimination in the McAfee entries in MSCONFIG. It turned out to be an unnecessary McAfee helper program for logging activity. Let's see if we can find that reference so you can check the KB first... Later...

Edited later: I found <!post=this post by HansV,443547>this post by HansV<!/post> pretty recently which has a link to the MS KB on the problem concerning WinXP. I continued my search looking for a similar article on Win98 and haven't found anything (yet). You might also want to check <!post=the two links,283363>the two links<!/post> in this old post of mine. Please note that one of the links has moved, but there is a re-route procedure there that will send you to the correct place.

You can try this MSKB article, but it's for XP & 2000 systems and may not apply to Win 98.

There are also issues of this type that occur with Norton products so you might want to check their site for possible solutions.
