    CLOSE WITHOUT SAVING (2002 10.2627.2625)

    Is there any way of closing without being prompted to save? Or is this just another of the ways in which WordPerfect is better? I appreciate that this could be a dangerous toy but I would like to have a button on my tool bar that would simply fry my document.

    You can create a macro in your Normal.dot:

    Sub CloseWithoutSave()
    On Error Resume Next
    ActiveDocument.Close SaveChanges:=wdDoNotSaveChanges
    End Sub

    and assign this macro to a custom toolbar button.

    PS: We know by now that you prefer WordPerfect to Word. There is no need to repeat it in every post. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Abandon your own changes or... if you are getting prompted to save when you don't think you've made any changes, that could indicate some other issue in your setup. Certainly not Word's normal behavior.

    I believe - from my own experience - that using the 2002 version to open up a Word (or Excel) document that has been previously saved with Office 2000, invokes the "Do you want to save changes?" window when you have made no changes and attempt close the document.

    While I can't think of any reason for that to be the case in Word, I really know almost nothing about Excel.

    In my experience with Word, so much as viewing the File>Properties dialog will cause Word to want to save the document. Depending on what field codes are in the headers and footers, using Print Preview also may cause this.

    Our File>Open commands are heavily customized, so I may be unaware of other scenarios. But just opening to take a peek really shouldn't mark a document as changed.

    Added: Two other thoughts: printer font changes and template availability could affect it, too.

    If there has been ANY conversion, field updating and etc, the file should be marked as changed and should ask if save is wanted.

    Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    If you're going to use a macro, another way would be:

    Sub CloseWithoutSave ()
    Activedocument.Saved = True
    Activedocument.Close
    End Sub

    Just my <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>

    The sort of document I have in mind is the one which you print, don't need, and just want to be shot of without prompts. I am grateful for both suggestions.

    <hr>so much as viewing the File>Properties dialog will cause Word to want to save the document<hr>
    Yep, experienced that too. In those cases one could create a "wrapper" in which the Saved status of a document is saved and restored:

    Sub DoSomethingThatAffectsSavedStatus()
    Dim blnSaved As Boolean
    blnSaved = ActiveDocument.Saved
    'Do your thing
    [tab ActiveDocument.Saved = blnSaved
    End Sub
