    @ and ' swapped (word 2000)

The other day my mom showed me something wierd happening with her copy of word. She opened a new document and typed Shift+' (") and the screen showed @. Also Shift+2 gave " instead of @. I tried a few random Shift+ variations but they all seemed to be OK.

Has anyone had this before or know what is causing it and how to fix it?

Did you check the keyboard language settings in the Control Panel.

It should probably be set to a US keyboard layout - assuming you are in Oz <img src=/S/aussie.gif border=0 alt=aussie width=21 height=22> (or possibly the US since you have a mom rather than a mum <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>)

This sounds perfectly normal for a UK English keyboard.

Yes I did, one of my first thoughts, made sure it was set to US keyboard.

And actually, I have a mum (OZ) but made sure the US friends understand us!!

As Stuart said, this is the standard layout for a UK keyboard, so somewhere along the line you're looking at a UK version instead of a US one! (or Oz one, if they're separate?!)

Do keyboards have drivers (apart from choosing the keyboard country in control panel)?

It's not clear from the information given which version of Windows your mum/mom is on, but in XP you can go to regional and language options in Control panel and from the languages tab click details to set both the default input language (upper part of the dialog box) and the keyboard layout to use (bottom half of the dialog box). A bit different in older versions of Windows.

To do a thorough job you should also set the default language in Word to be English (Australian) - or whatever flavour you want. (Open a document, click Tools->Language->Set Language, then choose the version you want and click Default...)

Does this only happen in Word or does the same thing happen in all programs (including renaming a file in Windows Explorer)?
