auto number cut and paste (03 SP1)

I want to copy auto-numbered sections from one document and past them into a different document. I want the numbering to stay the same.
Is theere a way to do that?

I think your only option is to break the auto numbering before you paste into a new document. On a COPY of your file, ctl+A and the ctl+SHIFT F9 .... this will break all links in the document and change it to text. You can then copy and paste without any problem, however the numbering will not be automatic any longer. Make sure you don't mess up your original.

    Thanks. That sounds like just the thing. <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

This did not work. Do you have any ther ideas?
When for example I delete a section 1A Section 1B changes to 1A.

    You can try the following:
    - Activate the Visual Basic Editor (Alt+F11)
    - Activate the Immediate window (Ctrl+G)
    - Type ActiveDocument.ConvertNumbersToText and press Enter
    - Switch back to Word (Alt+F11)
This will convert all automatic numbering to fixed text. You can copy segments of the document to another document without having the numbering adjust itself.

Warning1: close the original document without saving it!
Warning2: there are some reports of strange behavior if a number immediately follows a section break - check carefully!

    <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23> Thanks Hans!!
That worked perfectly. There were 13 section breaks and no numbering problems in my document. I did not check page numbers since they were irrelevant to my needs.
