santa.doc - (santa - satan virus )

    Hi,

Last night my husband discovered that we have a virus on our home computer. We use AVG, get it updated at least weekly and the scan runs several times a week. It has never detected this virus.

We are not connected to a server, but when he tried to do something a window came up with the message that the server was down. This has happened before and the only way to get rid of it was to reboot. He was quite annoyed and banged away at the X trying to close it multilple times. after several minutes a document opened up.

    It was titles Santa
    next line Santa = Satan?
next line * It dresses in Blood red.
next line * It is immortal, as far as we know

I did a search on google on part of the document and came up with 4 pages that have the exact text of the entire document, but no mention of a virus.

My husband checked to see where the document was on our system and it showed up in My Docs as Santa.doc
The date of creation was August 18, 2004.

I can't say that we noticed the document before, so if may not have appeared until after all his clicking on the server message.

Does anyone know anything about this virus or how to get rid of it?

    Thanks for any help.

I tried a search on this site, but it tookk about 10 minutes then came up with a blank page, so that is why i am posting.

Try scanning with Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/). If the virus is detected, there should be a link to get more information about how to clean it.

Also, make sure Windows is patched up to date, as the document may have been slipped in by exploiting a vulnerability that has been patched.

And what firewall do you run? If the answer is "none," try ZoneAlarm or Sygate (links elsewhere on this board).

Thanks, will give it a try when I get home.

We run ZoneAlarm set to not allow anything through without permission.

It is probably a very silly question, but what happened when you tried to delete SANTA.DOC?

What makes you think it is a virus?

We are not connected to a server

If you are connected to the internet, you are on a server. No way around it. That said, I must repeat John's question. What makes you think it's a virus ?? I ran a Google on the phrase and came up with a page that seems to indicate that this is something promoted by a bunch of religious zelots who object to the Santa part of Christmas. But it doesn't seem to be malicious by itself.

Your sequence of events though, indicates that a Trojan Horse might have sneaked into your system. Are you connected to the internet when this occures ?? The box that tells you that the server is down, is it grey and in the center of the screen with a flashing insertion point for you to reply or add text ?? Can you delete the file Santa.doc ?? If you do and the box with the message returns, does the file also return ?? Lastly, who uses this computer ??
