MSN Messenger (WinXP SP2 - MSNM v4.7 & v7.0)

I have just upgraded my MSN Messenger from v4.7 to 7.0. This works fine if I click the desktop icon. However if I click the icon in the toolbar in Internet Explorer it loads ver4.7. What have I done/missed?

How old is MSN Messenger 4.7?? I would see if it's removable in Add or Remove Programs, and if so, also remove 7.0, then reinstall 7.0.

I suspect that the problem is that an Internet Explorer registry key is pointing to the wrong/older folder, because the 7.0 installer never thought it would have to remove anything that old! You could try scanning the registry for instances of MSNMSGR.EXE, and good luck! (Was the main program called anything different in v4.7?).

Thanks John. I'll give that a try tonight. My PC (laptop) is only 6 months old, so the age of messenger is rather confusing.

I must say you are still one good looking man!

I'm pretty sure that the icon on the IE toolbar is for WINDOWS Messenger not MSN Messenger. Version 4.7 was the WM version for XP. They are two entirely separate products. Unfortunately, the only way to change the standard IE toolbar icon target to MSN Messenger is to muck around in the registry. I'll have to do some digging about the keys to change.

I prefer your theory, because Granville says it's on a pretty new laptop...

John,

When I hovered on the icon in the IE toolbar, the tooltip said Windows Messenger. When I use IM I use MSN Messenger so I just removed the icon from the toolbar. I'll try to find some time this weekend to hunt up the correct registry values to modify to change the IE toolbar ICO to reference MSN Messenger.

I had a look yesterday, and think the key is
HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerExternsions{FB5F1910... etc
but there are a number of values there and, whereas some seem easily changed, I'm not sure how easy it will be to replace all the Windows Messenger ones by MSN Messenger equivalents.

I bypass this problem a) by using Firefox and always leaving the left-hand column of icons visible on the desktop, so that windows are opened as almost full screen, but I can easily get at the things I want!

John,

I saw that registry key too. As you observed, several changes seem trivial. I just haven't had the time to figure out ALL the changes needed. At work (where I am currently), I just don't want to add another piece of software to worry about. IE fixes and enhancements happen as part of the normal SUS (soon to be WSUS) activity. I've got enough other stuff to track that I don't want to add FF. However, I did try it and was not overwhelmed by it so I'll just stick with IE for the time being. Pretty much the same at home. I don't want to introduce something that will 'freak out' my technophobe better half. I try to keep more or less the same software at home as I do at work as sometimes (albeit infrequently) I work at home.

Re: MSN Messenger (WinXP SP2 - MSNM v4.7 & v7.0)

Joe/John,

Thank you both for your input. I appreciate the amount of effort and if we do find a solution the changing the icon on IE's task bar I will certainly make the changes. When I hover over the icon in IE I just see "Messenger".

To me the easy fix is to have an icon for MSN Messenger in the Windows task ber, which I always have set to auto-hide.

Sorry, I wasn't able to spend the time this weekend to check out the registry changes. I'll try to get to it some evening this week.

Thanks Jo,

I would have a "play" myself but the only PCs I currently have access to are work ones. No one likes me when i break their 'puter.
