Winword.exe open up twice (Office XP SP3)

    Hi there

I have the followng issue occuring on a more regular basis:

The Microsoft error message appears along the lines of ' Word has crashed. would you like to send a report to Microsoft'. I click on No.
In the Windows Task Manager in tab Applications Word wont be displayed as a running application. However the Word application may not have closed properly. WinWord.exe will still be running in the processes. Even on a pc restart I've observed WinWord.exe still running. Users will then open up Word. This results in 2 or more sessions of Word running. And means more Word crashes and poor pc performance as CPU usuage will be high.

Why is it on a pc restart. or reboot Winword.exe is still running?
Is there a way to close all instances of WinWord.exe eg like in a registry key - instead of manually going to the Task Manager Processes tab?

    many thanks Diana

If Word is running immediately after a restart or reboot, it must be started automatically, either explicitly (see below) or because it is used as Outlook mail editor and Outlook is started automatically. If the latter is the case, it might be a good idea to see if the problems go away if Word is NOT used as mail editor.

There are several places to look for applications that are started automatically; the most likely ones are:
    - The Cocuments and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsStartup folder
    - The Cocuments and Settings<username>Start MenuProgramsStartup folder
    - The HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun registry key
    - The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun registry key

    Hi Hans

    - The HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun registry key
    - The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun registry key

With Word opened up twice I looked at the above registry keys but couldnt locate anything to do with Word running.

it has too be stores somewhere?

There was no need to have Word open when you looked at those registry keys; they list some of the applications that are automatically started by Windows when you log on. If none of the values under those keys refer to Winword.exe, we can rule out this possibility.
Have you looked at the two startup folders?
And have you checked whether you are using Word as your mail editor in Outlook?

    hey hans

winword.exe is not in the startup folder.

When word crashes> and Word is opened up again. Occasionally Winword.exe will have 2 sessions running in the Task Manager under Processes. meaning when that word session crashed it hasnt fully closed all its processes.

That current open session of Word will be closed> when the pc gets restarted - the other Winword.exe session will still be running in Task Manager even though the application is not opened on the pc (on startup)

i thought maybe in windows memory it has the word session opened?

After a true restart, Windows remembers nothing unless instructed by an application (such as an installer) to do something at the next startup. If Word is in memory after startup, something must be starting it up again!

You still haven't answered my question about Word as mail editor.

    Could you do the following:
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type msconfig
    - Press Enter or click OK.
    - Activate the Startup tab.
    - Look for items mentioning Wiword or Outlook.
    - You can make a screenshot and post it here.

    hey hans

apologies for not getting back to you sooner.
yes i have checked under the startup folders> and Winword.exe is not under these folders.
we dont use Outlook here > we use Lotus Notes email

when i goto the Start> Run
    type in msconfig
the result is i get an error message displaying ' Cannot find the file 'msconfig' (or one of its components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. '

    cheers diana :-)

Microsoft distributes msconfig with Windows XP, and it was in Windows 9x, but if I recall correctly, they left it out of Windows 2000. If you are running Windows 2000, apparently you can download msconfig from somewhere...try searching our Windows 2000 board for suggestions. If you are running XP, it really should work!

I'm not sure what to suggest for NT. You might have to use the individual tools (Notepad for system.ini, win.ini, boot.ini, and regedt32 for the run keys). And you might consider an upgrade. <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>
