'Format Styles' meny of Word97 (Wordxp)

I've tried to keep quiet on this but i can no longer; last week a client complained, too. I've searched the Options and found no clue.

I'd like my old Word97 "Format, Styles" menu back. Can I get it back in WordXP?

Back in the good old days I'd (keyboard) Alt-O, S, and then tap the leading letter of a style name. For example "L" would take me to the "L"ists styles, "M" would take me to my 'M"acro styles, and so on. Today (XP) when I choose Alt-O,S, I get a pathetic over-sized doo-dad on the RHS of the screen that just won't seem to respond to my keyboard. This is a retrograde step, IMNSHO, and something that caters primarily to medecins who treat strained wrists.

If you go to the Customize dialog and browse the Format list, you'll see there's a "Style..." entry as well as a "Styles and Formatting..." entry. The former is the one that you're looking for. Just add it to the Format menu in addition to (or in replacement of) "Styles and Formatting...".

    Added notes:

    1. Assuming you want to also keep "Styles and Formatting..." on the Format menu, change its first word from "&Styles" to "Styles" to get the Alt-O-S keyboard effect you want (i.e., to cause "S" to trigger the "Style..." entry).

    2. If you keep the Style Area visible on the left, double-clicking on a style name brings up the old Style menu (on my PC anyway, and I'm pretty sure I didn't tweak anything to cause that behavior).

Thanks for this, too, but as far as I'm concerned it can't be placed too far to the right - where lies my garbage bin.

Thanks for tolerating my vent. I've loved Styles for years, and have been so frustrated at having to reach for the mouse. For one thing, it disturbs the cat.

Also in the "It Worked Better Before" Dept.: If you make much use of tables, you may want to take a look at How to sidestep the problems of the Word 2000 (and higher) Table Properties dialog, which includes a recommended Table menu change (resurrecting an old menu item) and other advice.

You searched the Options... but did you search the Lounge? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> See <post#=315895>post 315895</post#> -- using Styles... from the Customize dialog's Commands list might solve the problem I've been having with tabs... I'll need to check that out.

Good One. Say "Bye Bye" to the nasty File-new doodad, and say "Hello" to the nice dialog box man.
