    Narrow spacing (Word 2000 SP3)

On my system, in some documents, occasionally all the spaces between words in some lines are so narrow as be almost virtually nonexistent, so that a line of words looks like one long string of letters. What could be causing this?

Has text alignment been set to Justified in those documents? Or has character spacing been set to condensed (in the Character Spacing tab of Format | Font)?

The character spacing is not set to condensed, and the 'nonexistent spaces' effect occurs on some lines regardless of paragraph alignment (or printer selection).

If you press Alt+F9, are there any strange field codes in the vicinity?

If you use Shift+F1 and then click on the line, is there any unusual paragraph formatting?

If you select the line and press Ctrl+Space and Ctrl+Q, does it return to the formatting that it should have for the underlying paragraph style?
