Re: CD roms disappear after install

Do you have Adaptec's (Roxio)Easy CD Creator installed? If so what version?

Yes, I did have Roxio installed. I forgot about that. I deinstalled it as well. I have Easy CD Creator 5.0. I deinstalled that and still can't get either my Compaq cd rom or my Ricoh CD-RW to work.

Re: CD roms disappear after install

Uninstall ECDC and your CD's are gone. Happened to me too! Lots of times! Adaptec published a fix - worked ok for me the 1st time. Then to fix another problem, I had to uninstall (their request) and I couldn't get the CD's back again! They gave me another fix (these are all registry zaps) and that didn't work either. The problem showed up all over the place when they brought out ECDC 5.0. Yecch. I love their products, just don't have much success with their support. Anyway, you are welcome to try either of their fixes, they may work for you. Or... you can try my fix (home grown with help from someone on the Internet. Easy to use and if you write down what you delete, easy to put back. Relatively harmless as far as Registry zaps go.) Here goes as best I can remember. Go into the registry (I used both REGEDT32 and REGEDIT, but REGEDIT worked best the last time). Go down the chain till you get to this... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{ 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}0000]. In there you find a bunch of entries, but there are two - a "high" filter, and "low" filter. Remove those two only. Leave the rest as is. Your CD's should be back. Let me know if it works. ...Michael (By the way I am using another product beside Roxio now, and may or may not go back depending on when they get their W2K 2000 fixes in. Many many discussions on the Roxio site. I follow it daily and they are trying really hard. They'll get there eventually. Perhaps by XP time :-) )

    Michael,
I was able to find this key but I wasn't sure what you meant by "high" and "low" filter. So I deleted this entry completely but still doesn't work. Don't worry I made a backup of my registry and reimported it back in ok.

Re: CD roms disappear after install

The last time I did this, I didn't see the 'high' or 'low' (I'm not exactly sure of these names, but high/low is close) using REGEDT32. I didn't figure out why, because with REGEDIT I did see them. I know in the past REGEDT32 worked ok. The important part is to only delete those two entries in the last sub key, not the rest. Glad you backed it up, but re-installing ECDC would have put em back too. I keep copies of the whole 'regback' directory before any changes, just like you. Neat. ...Michael

Ok. I fibbed. After rebooting a couple of times and deleting the cd-rom from device manager. (They had red x's on them). I was finally able to get my cd roms back. Now I reinstall Easy CD then Office XP.

    Thanks for the help!

Re: CD roms disappear after install

Great! I read your 1st msg from work, so when I got home I was going to send you the 2 registry zaps from Adaptec to try (then you would have to use my zap, too of course). Got home and read your 2nd msg. So, that part is unnecessary. Great. ...Michael

CD roms disappear after install (XP)

I need your help. I am running Windows 2000 SP2. I was running Office 2000 SR1A with Windows 2000 SP1. I deinstalled Office 2000 and installed the beta of Office XP.
Since then both of my cd-rom drives have disappeared. I was able to install Office XP from my cd fine.

I installed Windows 2000 SP2 in hopes that it would resolve this but it doesn't. There aren't any hardware conflicts. I was even able to rediscover both of these cd rom drives. Yeah I thought it was fix but lo..I still can't see them or use them.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.
