Search button from start menu (windows xp sp2)

All of a sudden when I click start, search the computer freezes for about 30 seconds. I am unable to use the start search feature. Any ideas on what to do? I can launch IE 6 and then use search to look for files on the computer but clicking start then search does nothing.
    Thanks,
    Mike
