Cursor Movement in Auto-Numbered Paras (Word 2003)

    Hope this makes sense.
I do a lot of keyboarding to move around a doc in Word. The shift from Word'97 to Word'03 seems to have changed where the cursor stops when moving between auto-numbered paragraphs. Ctrl plus up and down arrows moves you between paragraphs. Okay so far. USED to be the cursor would skip the auto-number "field" and go directly to the start of the text of that para. NOW the cursor stops first in that auto-number field and all the fields are highlighted in grey. You need an extra press of the navigation combo or right arrow to move into the paragraph itself. Not unsurmountable, to be sure, but very annoying when I count, e.g., three "moves" to get to Para. 3 and now it takes twice that many.

I looked under Tools>options and under preferences and checked various reference books. Could find nothing relevant.
    Anyone out there got a solution? Or am I simply a victim of "new and iimproved." <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15>
    Thanks.

You could create two macros, ParDown (consisting of Selection.Move wdParagraph, 1) and ParUp (consisting of Selection.Move wdParagraph, -1) and assign them to the Ctrl+Down and Ctrl+Up keystrokes. But there may be a downside (and I suspect this may be why Hans didn't suggest it) -- namely, that if there are other contexts in Word where you use Ctrl+Down and/or Ctrl+Up for other purposes, reassigning those keys might interfere with using those keystrokes for those other purposes in those other contexts.

If that's the case, an alternative solution might be to assign the macros to a different pair of keystrokes that aren't otherwise used by Word (Alt+Down and Alt+Up maybe?).

Now that's a thought, St33v3. I may have to experiment a bit. Embarrassed I didn't think of it, as I use macros all the time.
    Definitely worth a tryout.

    Keep those cards & letters coming, folks! <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>
