    CWS

What is the best way to get rid of CWS Hijackers? I've got Norton Anti-virus, Spysweeper , Adaware and (now) McAfee on a thirty day trial, but daily spy sweeping still shows the presence of CWS Hijacker---it must be re-booting or something! The CWS seems to have got in when I was between Firewalls! Please don't be too technical in your replies--my username means what it says! Thanks.

    Try downloading and running CWShredder.

    Re: CWS

THanks for the advice. I had a look at the website and started downloading, but was then alarmed when they asked me for my email address. I've had so much damaging stuff 'spammed' my way that I backed off at this point. Is there anyway I can download CWS shredder without giving them my email address? (putting it on disc or something like that?) Hope this isn't a naive question!

    Re: CWS

I don't get asked for my email address when I just try to download CWShredder by itself, without the free trial of SpySubtractPro. Look at the right-hand bar.

What's to stop you making up an email address, of xx@xx.com, say or GoAway@hotmail.com?

    Re: CWS

I don't know if John's "made up" address scheme would work but I know it wouldn't on some (legitimate!) sites that send you an instructional or confirming email. I've never downloaded or used this product, but I'd say, from the number of times the site is recommended, that they are probably "safe" and if it were me I wouldn't be nervous about giving them an address if it WERE necessary. On the other hand, you could go to one of the free email services and get a "throw-away" address to keep for web types of stuff. I use one of my own control under my own web domain, but after some time one usually learns which sites can be trusted NOT to sell or give away email addresses - I say usually because of Murphy's Law...

    Re: CWS

Thanks---I've downloaded the shredder alone (no email address required) and it seems to have worked!

Are there any websites to be avoided if you want to avoid CWS or can it come from anywhere?

It's impossible to be specific. You are more likely to be infected with nasties if you visit dubious websites, of course...

If you check out the various sypware reference sites, they typically describe the ways in which these "products" get installed.

If you are not running the newest verison of Internet Explorer 6 supplied in Windows XP Service Pack 2, you might want to increase your security settings in IE to minimize the risk of "drive-by" installs (ActiveX controls getting pushed to your browser).

    Re: CWS

Following on from Al's advice regarding 'throw-away' addresses, I myself have a yahoo! address that is used solely for this purpose, and for registering on any other sites that require it. ALL of the spam I get goes to this address, and absolutely none whatsoever to any of my 'proper' email accounts. Every so often I just check this account & delete everything to clear it out.

Just a suggestion that may come in useful to fellow Loungers...

    Re: CWS

And Loungers who have a web domain likely already know this, but just in case. Most web hosting services provide POP mail with "alias" capability. My Lounge profile shows such an email address. Although I've NEVER gotten any spam or unwanted email through The Lounge, I did change that address once (can't remember why) and all I had to do was go to my domain and DELETE the old one.

    Lyra J

What is this address, so that we can send it "test" spam for a fascinating variety of pharmaceuticals, obtaining money from an African country, and so on? All in the interests of research, of course...
