Track Changes & document lock up (Word 97/2000/...)

    Hi,

I am wondering if anyone has seen this problem. I have document and its behaviour is different depending on Word97 or Word2000 in use. The scenario is as follows:

The document is 137 pages. Track Changes is switched ON in both versions of Word
Word97: Open Document, it takes about 50 seconds to sort itself out and allow editing of the document (updates the status bar with the number of pages in the document etc)

Word2000: Open Document, it takes about 13 MINUTES to sort itself out, i.e. it allows me to edit the document after 13 minutes!!!! <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45> This seems to be to do with the TOC (I think).

If I then save that document after accepting ALL changes in Word2000, it allows me to edit the document almost instantaneously.

Has anybody seen this kind of behaviour before and if so, is there a fix? My users would like to keep the Track Changes switched on. I don't understand the difference in behavour between 97 & 2000. Is there an option that I can set to solve this problem?

    Any ideas well appreviated. Thanks.

    Hi Robie

Depending on how many images (or other inserted elements) your document has, 137 pages may already be quiet big for MS Word. Perhaps the problem would disappear, if you could split it in smaller documents.

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear enough.

The document editing is fine in Word97 but NOT in Word2000 ( a backward step in my opinion). Just to make you laugh - this document is itself reduced from a wait for it 413 pages. The document doesn't contain ANY pictures. It mostly a text document with tables in it.

It is definitely to do with Track changes - since I can edit that document relatively quickly (in 200) if I save it after accepting all changes. BTW: the changes are not that much in themselves.

Word 2000 was Microsoft's first version with "next generation" HTML-like tables. I'm not sure whether the test machine is up to SP3 (or whatever was the last service pack update for Office 2000), but if so, it could just be the much more complicated way that Word 2000 thinks about tables vs. Word 97, or an unanticipated problem related to tracked changes with the new tables. I suspect that Word 2002 would be an improvement, but that probably doesn't help you...
