Password access problem (XP)

This is a case of the blind relaying for the blind, but here goes...

My neighbour has two PCs (call them A & networked, both running XP Pro. A can access the files on B, but B can't access the files on A, even though B can "see" A as part of the network. There is a request for a password to enable such access, but he has no idea of what that might be (A was apparently "set up" by someone else). The only good news is that he can fully access everything on each of them independently.

I did run across a thread about a registry setting, which he changed from 1 to 0 on A, as suggested, but this made no difference. From the sound of things, he's stuck at the password screen. Are there any obvious things to try, or possible workarounds here?

thanks
Alan

On computer A, are there any "Shares" that can be read?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Hi Dave

I'll check that with him this afternoon, but I'm fairly sure, from his verbal description, that all he can do is to "see" the other computer as part of the network... then a brick wall.

That is what is telling me he has NOT shared anything on the A computer. It will have the default "C$" share, which is for Admin use and needs a password.

Re: Password access problem (XP)

Do both computers have accounts with passwords? On my little two node peer-ro-peer at home, the two XP Pro SP2 boxes refused access to each other until I added passwords to their respective accounts.

I'm not sure why this is, perhaps a default security policy, and I wasn't going to go investigate it because I want to go to a server-domain security model anyway.

But, that's what happened to me.

Thanks Jim & Dave for your suggestions on this. Hopefully, I will see the person concerned during the week and report back here.
