    Desktop backgrounds (XP from 2002)

When I try to set a picture that is in my picture file as desktop background I right click and and highlight and click Set As Desktop Background. This used to work. It no longer does. When I click nothing happens. Yet, this works on the internet when I right click a picture on the web. Is there a way to fix this without using System Restore. If I do a System Restore all programs I've put on my computer recently do not function. I have to restore them. Is there a simple solution to this problem? Thanks for your help.

    Oneandmany,
Did you try opening the file with picture and fax viewer and then setting as desktop background from there? It really is a good idea to set a restore point before and after each software installation. Hindsight! I know it all to well.

Sometimes a picture gets set as the background but the desktop doesn't "refresh" and continues to show the old picture. After you click Set As Desktop and the new picture doesn't show, if you right-click on the desktop and choose Properties and then the Desktop tab, does the new picture show up in the little preview window? If so, probably all you need to do to "refresh" the desktop is change the setting in the Position box (e.g., from Tile to Center -- and then back to Tile if appropriate).

The picture does not appear in the preview window. I tried changing the setting in the Position box but nothing happened. What I can do though is when I click on browse in the Property box I can then copy a picture to the desktop. It doesn't show up in the preview window until I click apply. But again, I cannot right click on a picture in my picture file and make it the desktop background. Nothing happens. Thanks for your suggestion.

Try this..... I found it here.
Any photo you have in your computer can be displayed as a background on the desktop.

To display a photo on your desktop

    1. Click Start, and then click My Pictures.

    2. Click the photo you want as your desktop background.

    3. Under Picture Tasks, click Set as desktop background.

It would seem that you may have bigger problems than not being able to set pictures as your desktop wallpaper. From your initial post you indicated that if you use System Restore that none of your newly installed programs work. System Restore should not do this. It is designed to change only your system files and shouldn't affect your programs. If it is, I'd suspect something more than a minor issue. What other unusual symptoms or behaviours, if any, is your system presenting you with. In other words, what doesn't seem to be working as it should ??

I have always had system restore turned off, but I think your statement warrants clarification, Doc. If you restore to a point BEFORE the installation of one or more software apps, they will NO LONGER be installed, i.e. the registry. Their directories, files and data will still be there, but Windows will not know about them.

Take a look here: W,X,Y&Z Page - Windows XP from A to Z for some suggestions on stuff to check and possibly modify.

I wasn't aware of that Al. But then, I don't use System Restore much and probably never restored past any of my installations. Sorry about the misleading info. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>
