Re: GRC's OptOut

I remember it as one of the original efforts to counter malware, as a predecessor to AdAware. From the look of the OptOut -- Internet Spyware Detection and Removal page, it seems to be rather dated now:

The FAQ also seems like it's bee many moons since an update:
The current, freeware, release of OptOut is only aware of the Aureate spyware. Although OptOut's "Spyware" tab contains greyed-out mentions of "Conducent/Timesink" and "Comet Cursor", OptOut does not currently detect or remove them. The forthcoming commercial release of OptOut will detect and remove all spyware known to us.

This is another example of where Gibson leaves ancient and now-outdated stuff all over his website, without any indication of when it was written. Somewhere on the website he passes over the antispyware torch to Lavasoft and thus Ad-Aware, as Alan says. This must have been about three-to-five years ago?

I have more-or-less given up looking at his website because it is both so dated and so un-dated, if you see what I mean...!

Re: GRC's OptOut

The dating issue was one of the reasons I asked. It seems that John is correct about Mr. Gibson's habit of leaving things around on his site long after their time and not making it particularly easy to find out a cronology of what's what and when. He does hand-off to Lavasoft here but links you to his next product in the same breath (which, if you check the bottom of the page, is as dated as the original). Thanks for the input.

...and incidentally, who in their right mind would provide a date counter to TWO decimal places?

Is the length of time between updates THAT important?!

Mr. Gibson apparently wants to give the impression of throughness, despite ample evidence on the site to the contrary.

I followed Steve Gibson's work a few years back. I get the impression he loves following through technical stuff to the nth degree, but forgets things like when Christmas Day is.

I also was a fan of Steve's a few years back when the "Click of Death" afflicted 2 of my Iomega Zip drives and his site had the quote from an Iomega exec that they would stand behind their products forever. I got 2 new zip drives and 5 disks because of that quote !! He writes some really solid software, but I think he's a couple sandwiches short of a picnic when it comes to the day-to-day stuff.
