XL Crashes with Formulae

XL97 SR2 Win98
Excel crashes whenever I
1. type in = ready to put in a formula
2. click on the PasteFunction button
3. type in +
4. try to edit an existing formula

I get a Norton CrashGuard warning.
I have moved and renamed personal.xls.
It doesnt crash if I just enter numbers, or text or use the Bold button.

Does anyone know how to fix please?

Sorry, this sounds serious and all I can offer is empathy, but I thought I'd let you know it's good to see your signature line back on the boards.

Re: XL Crashes with Formulae - Fixed

Problem Fixed but no Solved:
It also crashed when opening Excel in Safe mode and in Windows in Safe Mode. It wasn't solved by re-installing Excel.
Eventually, I used RegEdit, saved and then deleted the Excel keys under Current_User and Local_Machine.
This took me back to a default setting for Excel and I only had to re-create my toolbars and Options.

However I still have no idea how or why it happened and so cannot guard against a next time. Still that's (MS) life !
