    Rules, Rules, Rules (MSO 2003)

I have mail that has overlapping conditions.

Group 'A' is addressed from 'Kent'
Group 'B' is addressed from "PW"

-- Both the above *may* have 'Twp' in the subject

Group 'C' Has 'Tpw' in the subject

Can I set the rules for 'A' with a:

"If From contains 'Kent, move it to Folder_A, except if 'Tpw' is in the subject, then stop processing rules.

    Then the rule for 'B':

If From contains "PW", move to Folder_B, except if 'Tpw' is in the subject, then stop processing rules.

    Then rule 'C':

If Subject contains 'Tpw', move to Folder_C.

Would this work? And also, would the rest of the rules process against the rest of the emails? -- Without all processing having been "stopped"?

    Regards,

    Chuck

I have regular calls about Outlook folders and sometimes have to really think outside the box.

You could go for the hierachal approach of yor rules say

Main Inbox set the rules to say:

    1) If contains Kent send to Folder A
    2) If contains PW send to folder B
    3) if contains Twp send to folder C

And then set rules for each of folder A, B and C

    Folder A

    1) if contains Twp send to folder C

    Folder B

    1) if contains Twp send to folder C

    etc

I think that roughly follows your logic. I just find it easier to think of each folder as an entity and sent specific rules to them instead of the main in box doing all the hard work. I hope this helps?

I don't see where I can apply rules to folders other than the Inbox unless I do it manually.

    Hi Chuck

Sorry, that what I was suggesting to do it manually with the rules wizard. I am at home at the moment trauling through the lounge before bedtime and don't have Outlook on my home PC but do at work. To clarify, are you looking to put in Client rules or server side rules, and also do you use personal folders on your PC?

'Cause somehow what I've got right now is doubling up my emails, so that rule one puts it in Folder A, then rule 2 puts copy_2 of memo_1 in Folder_A

Are you using the 'copy to' or 'send to' rule?

I only have personal folders... I have no server side rules or folders.

Although I am on a home network, for all intents and purposes this is a standalone...

To create a rule with multiple conditions, in the Which conditions do you want to check list,
select a condition that contains the word "or".

    1)Click Inbox .

2)On the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard.

3)In the Apply changes to this folder list, click the Inbox you want.

    4)Click New.

5)Click Start creating a rule from a template.

6)Select the rule template, and then click Next.

7)In the Which conditions do you want to check list, select one or more conditions containing "or", and then click Next.

8)Follow the instructions in the Rules Wizard.

for 1) you can change this to folder A, B or C

I just checked them... They are "Move" not "copy".

Re: Rules, Rules, Rules (MSO 2003)

    Hi Chuck

I have attached a screen shot of an Outlook folder structure ( I mocked it up although I don't use it as my client here).

Do your personal folders sit within the inbox or are they part of the main structure as my picture depicts? If they are in the inbox, I would take them out and place them like the picture and now try to set the rules.

I am signing off for the night now but will have a look at it in the morning ( in about 10 hours from the time of this post). If you have not had a better answer could you try and add a screen shot of your set up at home as it may give me some clues to get around your problem

Your original rules should work, but the last one also should stop processing more rules for that message if it is moved.

The messages would all be moved (from the inbox), on an if/then/else basis. So should all the rules have a "Stop Processing" limitation?

That only affects these (particular specified) messages, right? So the rest of my rules would work on the rest of the mail?

    Good Morning

What if you change the order of the rule so that you check for "TPW" first then folow with the other rules?
