Antispyware legislation

A bill has been introduced in the U.S. Senate to prohibit unauthorized installation of software on a computer, require clear disclosure about the source of any advertising and about uninstall capabilities, etc. The Spy Block Act (S. 687) has been referred to the Senate Committe on Science, Commerce and Transportation and won't be sent to the full Senate for a vote til they've approved it.. Don't know if there's any interest in this, but if you are one who's said about spyware, "There oughta be a law!" this is your chance to make your feelings known on getting this done, or even on what the bill should include. The text of the bill and other info can be found by going here: http://thomas.loc.gov/ and keying "S. 687" (no quotes) into the Search Bill Text 109th Congress box (I can't link directly to search results; they're temporary). A list of Committee members with addresses, phone #, and links to their web pages, through which you can usually send them an email, is here: http://commerce.senate.gov/about/membership.html . I assume this post doesn't violate the rule about political posts, but if it violates one about being too boring for words, go ahead and delete it.

    Welcome to the Lounge Maud.

No, it's not boring at all. In fact, it's about time something like this went onto the statute books. The huge increase in malware of the last couple of years is a real problem, and while I'm not niaive enough to think it will stop it, it's a step in the right direction at least.

    PS Nice userpic!

Thanks for the welcome, Lyra. I, too, feel that, while this will by no means be the magic wand we all wish we had, it could be a useful tool, providing the legislation is well-crafted. It puts on the books what we ought to be able to take for granted, the right to private and unimpeded use of one's own data and equipment in one's own home or business.

I've been admiring everyone else's userpics, and I couldn't resist the opportunity to look much cooler than I do in real life!

Thank you, sir, that sounds much nicer than saying I'm wolfish! (But only because wolves have been unfairly maligned.) Actually, my first thought was to use a picture of a dog. Guess that wouldn't have done much for my reputation!
