Sent Items deletes pictures or handwritten content (Outlook 2003)

For some reason, Outlook is now deleting any pictures or handwritten content when a message is saved in the "sent items" folder. This just started happening and I cannot figure out why. In the place of the picture or handwritten content (my signature), an icon is displayed as is shown by the attached file. Would appreciate how to solve this irksome issue.

Update: This is also true for the inbox. My signature does not show when I send myself a message.

If you right-click a blank area of the message and choose View Source, can you locate the HTML tags that display the signature? For example, do you see a tag that starts with <IMG SRC=''cid: or anything like <OBJECT where your signature is supposed to be?

    Thanks for your reply.

Actually I do not see those statements you mention. Here is this XML coding in the attachment:

    Here's the key line:

    ">

The image is supposed to be embedded in the message (this is indicated by the cid in the SRC attribute). Unlike linked pictures, which have the right-click option to download, embedded images should automatically display.

I wonder whether you have images turned off in Internet Explorer? IE and the HTML message display of Outlook and Outlook Express are closely linked together.

The only other possibility is that Word cannot find the signature graphic when it is composing the message. Does it appear on screen while you are composing? Oh, this happens for all pictures? Hmmm... I don't use Word as my mail editor, so I couldn't say whether there is some setting in Word that might be causing this problem.

Yes, the image appears on the screen when composing the message. After the message is sent the signature graphic does not show any longer. However, what is really strange is that when the message is selected in order to reply to it, then the signature graphic appears in the reply.

This must have something to do with, as you say, images been turned off within Internet Explorer but I cannot find that.

The setting in IE is under Tools>Internet Options..., Advanced tab, Multimedia category. Does it work? (If so, isn't it annoying that they are tied together this way?)

Unfortunately, that did not help the situation. That checkbox was checked. This is driving me nuts.

Does it look correct in the Reading Pane (formerly known as the Preview Pane)?

When you open a sent HTML message, does it open in Microsoft Word? I don't and can't use Word 2002 as my mail editor with Outlook 2003, so the more we get away from the built-in Outlook editor, the less I know.

Re: Sent Items deletes pictures or handwritten con

If I open a message that has been sent, the signature graphic does not appear except as an icon as noted above. This also happens in the reading pane.

I am using Outlook 2003 with Microsoft Office 2003 and I have no problems, so far, with compatibility of word 2003 with Outlook 2003. But I wish I could find an answer to this problem. One of the negative aspects of this issue is that when I go to print out a sent message, my signature does not appear on the printed page. And, if I hand write a reply (I'm using a tablet PC), the hand writing will not print as well. Frustrating.

Are you using a server such as Exchange, or a pst?

This is a PST file. I've already used the scan PST utility just thinking that maybe there was some contamination within the file, but there was not. I believe this problem is confined to either Microsoft Word or outlook as either one of them is thinking that they are doing the right thing conserving space by not showing the graphic. The funny thing is this problem just started about a week ago -- previously all of the graphics -- including my hand written e-mail messages -- in the inbox and sent items folders were displayed properly.

I came across this ask-leo page, but I think most of the solutions there have been discounted.

Have you tried a test email without using Word?

Presumably this is only happening to emails you compose. What happens if you forward or reply to an email you have received with embedded graphics?
