Welcome to the Lounge

Anti Adware, Spyware, Hijack contains links to some of the most popular programs. In addition I also recommend Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (Beta)

I use Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, MS AntiSpyware and SpywareBlaster.

Prevention obviously is a large part of the picture as well. Some of the above-listed tools will monitor software installation in real time. Patching Windows and Internet Explorer, tightening up IE's control of installers (ActiveX controls), and operating a strong software firewall are essential to avoid "surprises." If you share your computer with folks who like to "try" things, some education about the hazards of the Internet also may be in order.

For some tutorials and insight into how to use these tools check this post. It's always best to run more than one spyware/malware detection and removal tool on your system. The tools mentioned in either of these two linked posts and a newcomer since they were locked down is Webroot's Spysweeper ( get a free spyware scan here too). The others are but this one is $30 and well worth the price. IMHO, of course.
