    Print Preview Error (2002 Pro)

Just an inquiry to see if anyone has run across the same error I am getting. I have Project in the Gantt Chart View and have a field I use called Contact. These are filled in with names of the managers of the tasks. I am using the Autofilter function to print schedules for my managers. All are able to print preview and print without problem except for one. When I filter on this managers name, I cannot get it to Print Preview. I get a fatal error and tells me Project must close. Attached is the error box. It just seems to not like the name in the filter, a common name (Dickson). Can't figure out why it is doing this. Microsoft site has no information concerning this problem.

    Thanks

    Don,

None. I am able to print and print preview with all people listed in the contact field except 1. I am using the exact same columns for each. I can't imagine it having something to do with the name in the contact field.

Re: Print Preview Error (2002 Pro)

    Randy,

Is the Contact field a customized field? Also, is there any chance that the name that is causing the crash is found in significantly greater numbers of tasks than the other names - or vice versa (i.e., one page of output vs. multiple pages of output?

I'm just trying to jog your memory for other symptoms, as the error message is too generic to give any hints.

    Thanks,

Re: Print Preview Error (2002 Pro)

    Don,

The Contact field is the standard field built into Project. It is not customized in any way. At first I thought it was an issue with having it used in differing ways. For example, I have that same name used by itself as well as in combination with another name. (Dickson or Duncan/Dickson) Dickson is the only autofilter problem I have run into. Cannot think of any reason why it would not work for just him. Maybe Project doesn't want him working on the project...! <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39> He is listed for about 25 tasks on a 1000+ task project. Other people with similar amounts of tasks print just fine. I have no clue with this one.

    Thanks

    Randy,

My only suggestion would be to run MS Office Update to see if you are missing any MSP patches.

Re: Print Preview Error (2002 Pro)

    Don,

I was thinking you hit on something, so I tried to update. Our corporate IT folks have our computers set to update automatically. However, there is very few of us that have Project. When I went in to update, it did allow me to update just Project to SP1. After doing that, I ran the update again and it also said I needed to update the security patch for Project. Performed all updates and still didn't fix the problem. I even ran the Project "Detect & Repair" process. It still does not like this name for some reason. Let me know if you come up with anything else.

    Thanks for your thoughts! <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

    Randy,

Short of receiving an example attachment (cleansed of any proprietary info), I don't have any other clues (unless you haven't rebooted and retested since performing the patch updates).

Re: Print Preview Error (2002 Pro)

I can cleanse it and send it, but it is still going to be way too big to post here even zipped. With all data, the file is over 9 MB. If you can give me an e-mail to send it to, I can try that route.

Also, in the process of cleansing, I discovered a couple of oddities. When I removed all of my custom fields (they weren't shown when trying to print), The problem switched to different contacts. That just adds to the inconsistency with this problem. Also, when I got it scaled down as far as I could, the problem was the same. What I changed next was to remove the Progress Line from the Gantt Chart. This totally eliminated the problem. When I put it back in, the problem returned. I was really hoping to be able to print the sheets with the progress lines included. This makes no sense, as it prints with some contacts and not others. I am making this worse aren't I?

    Thanks

    Randy,

I sent you my e-mail address via the Send2Friend feature. If you have received it, please feel free to send the cleansed MSP file(s). If not, let me know and I will try to send it again.

Re: Print Preview Error (2002 Pro)

    Randy,

I received the last copy you sent, and have opened and duplicated the issue. In addition, your file crashes in 2000 Pro & 2003 Pro also!

I think you have a legitimate MSP bug on your hands, and I'm not sure that I can be of much help at this point.

    Sorry!

Re: Print Preview Error (2002 Pro)

    Don,

Thanks. Just glad to know it is not just me. The other sources I have talked to refer to a possibility of a Project database corruption possibility. Have you ever seen any other cases where the data in Project just wasn't quite right? Thanks for your help and I hope I can keep it up long enough to get this project completed. Will continue to work on repair via transfer through Project Insight or Access.

    Thanks again! <img src=/S/surrender.gif border=0 alt=surrender width=31 height=23>

Re: Print Preview Error (2002 Pro)

    Randy,

The only other time I have seen corruption it was massive. It used to happen when I would leave a project file open all day long under MSP 98. I would see all of the summary information change to obviously incorrect information (e.g., start, finish, work, duration, etc...). Someone did recover some information by saving the file(s) involved to one of the database formats, and then resuscitated it back to *.mpp format. I just tried this with your file, but it didn't seem to help. I may not be using the correct procedure, though.

You may want ot post this issue on the MS web-site and see if the MS Project MVPs can provide any additional help or instruction (=> http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/...t&lang=en&cr=US )

    I wish I could be of more help... <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>
